Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the final episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has finished its first season to great success, but the title of the show itself caused some confusion in the finale.
This series is based on George R.R. Martin’s Dunk & Egg stories, following the journey of Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his intelligent young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), as they travel through Westeros. As the series neared its end, Dunk went through a Trial by Combat and suffered losses, forcing him to deal with the aftermath and decide on his future.
As a huge fan of the show, I was honestly a little confused when the season finale ended with a title card saying “A Knight of the Nine Kingdoms”! It made me wonder if they were changing the name. But thankfully, showrunner Ira Parker quickly cleared things up in an interview with the LA Times – they’re sticking with the original title! It’s still a bit of a mystery why they showed that different title card at the end, but Parker explained his reasoning in a recent Variety interview. I’m glad they’re not renaming it, and I’m really curious to hear why he did that!
I might be adding a bit too much humor, and some people might not like it. But I tried to bring a lighter feel to the show. I’m also still figuring things out and learning as I go. It’s bound to get a reaction, and I’ll probably have a different perspective on it after some time. Ultimately, I’m happy with how it turned out, and many of the talented people I worked with felt the same way. It’s genuine and based on real experiences – it really explores all sides of things.
We aim to balance the grim realities of Westeros with moments of levity and humor, mirroring how people cope with sadness in real life – finding ways to laugh even during difficult times. It’s important to have those moments of relief. That’s why, even amidst hardship, characters like Dunk and Egg maintain their familiar spirit and offer a bit of normalcy.
Parker explained that there was a lot of debate early on about what to call the series. Since it’s based on Martin’s Dunk & Egg novellas, some wondered if using the book titles for the series name was the right approach.
Initially, George didn’t want the show titled ‘Dunk & Egg,’ feeling it sounded too much like a sitcom, similar to ‘Laverne & Shirley.’ I agreed with him at the time. However, as we neared the end of post-production, I briefly considered using the ‘Dunk & Egg’ title, thinking everyone would refer to it that way anyway. My assistant convinced me it wasn’t a good idea, and I realized they were right. I’m glad the show is called ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ as it allows viewers to approach it with fresh eyes and discover its lighter tone, rather than having preconceived notions based on the ‘Dunk & Egg’ nickname. Hopefully, that approach works well.
The series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has received a lot of positive feedback, with many episodes ranking among the best not only in the Game of Thrones universe, but across all television series. A second season is currently being made, and it will follow the popular characters Dunk and Egg as they travel to Dorne – a location well-known to Game of Thrones viewers. The new season is titled “The Sworn Sword.” While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, fans are already excited to see what happens next.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is available to stream on HBO.
