After the new Doctor Who series didn’t quite connect with audiences, the show’s future is uncertain. It’s not the fault of the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, but this version of the classic British sci-fi series relies too much on past references, rushes through character development, and feels like it lacks a clear long-term plan.
The latest season of Doctor Who streamed simultaneously on Disney+ and the BBC, with Russell T. Davies – who successfully relaunched the show in 2005 – returning as showrunner. After two seasons, the show ended, reportedly due to low viewership numbers, rising production costs, and controversial creative decisions. Following the cancellation, Ncuti Gatwa, who played the Doctor, departed the series, and the character unexpectedly regenerated into Billie Piper, a former companion.
After the second season finished, most fans didn’t react well, leading Disney+ to end their involvement. But the BBC announced that Doctor Who will be back for a Christmas special in 2026, with Russell T Davies still in charge.
Murray Gold, who composed the music for the show for many years, recently shared that the script for the upcoming special is finished, but with a unique approach. He explained that Russell T Davies, the writer, created several different versions of the script to account for various possibilities. Gold added that he’s not even sure he was meant to know about the multiple versions.
Gold recently shared his thoughts on the future of Doctor Who, acknowledging the show is at a critical juncture after the mixed reaction to Russell T Davies’ return and the surprise reappearance of Piper. He expressed optimism, stating, “I’m hopeful this will be the beginning of a fantastic new chapter for the show, and I really want that to happen.”
Murray Gold is still very enthusiastic about working on Doctor Who. He said he’d always accept an offer to return, explaining, “I’d say ‘Yes’ immediately. I definitely wouldn’t turn down a request from Russell – it’s a really enjoyable show, even when it presents challenges!”
Despite Gold’s positive outlook for the show’s future, his mention that Russell T Davies has written multiple drafts of the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas special is significant. Everyone involved has been very secretive about whether Ncuti Gatwa will be the Doctor, or if Piper will play a different character using the show’s time travel elements.
The fact that Russell T Davies has written several versions of the special suggests that he, Ncuti Gatwa, the BBC, or the future showrunner are still figuring out the implications of the Doctor’s regeneration. However, fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Doctor Who later this year, hoping to get a glimpse of what’s in store for the show.
