The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has a great solution for handling Thor’s potential departure without permanently removing him – and it doesn’t involve a simple reboot. Because the MCU has always included characters like Thor and the Hulk, fans are wondering if their stories will also conclude, similar to how Iron Man and Black Widow’s arcs ended years ago.
Many fans believe Thor might die in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars to conclude his character arc. However, given where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading, killing Thor off completely would likely be a mistake. Fortunately, the MCU has a built-in way to tell a story about Thor’s death without it being the end of Chris Hemsworth’s time as the character.
The Thor Corps Would Be The Perfect Way To Give The MCU A Thor Death Story Without Killing The Character Off For Good
It would be a real shock if the 2027 movie Avengers: Secret Wars didn’t closely follow the 2015 comic book series of the same name. The comic’s storyline fits perfectly with the current direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga. Like the comics, the movies are dealing with the fallout from universes colliding, and it looks like Doctor Doom will be the main villain, just as he was in that 2015 run, especially leading into both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies won’t necessarily follow the comics exactly, but their main plot points will probably be adapted for the screen. This is important because this comic storyline introduces the Thor Corps, a significant group that will likely play a role in a future Thor adventure.
During the Secret Wars event, many different versions of Thor team up after the multiverse collapses, creating the Thor Corps. They act as a kind of peacekeeping force, but ultimately serve to uphold Doctor Doom’s oppressive control over the newly formed world.
It’s very likely that we’ll see some versions of Thor die in the upcoming Avengers films, while the main Thor from the MCU survives. This could happen if a variant of Thor decides to help the heroes fight Doom, even if it means sacrificing himself, or through another emotionally impactful storyline.
Using The Thor Corps For A Death Storyline Would Repeat A Previous MCU Trick
Considering the MCU has already established the multiverse and used alternate versions of characters to explore themes of life and death, it would make perfect sense for them to use a ‘Thor Corps’ – a team of Thors from different realities – to tell a story about Thor’s death without actually killing off the main version of the character. This approach has proven successful and paves the way for similar storylines in future Marvel movies.
A great example of this can be seen in Deadpool & Wolverine. The movie’s main storyline brings back Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine by introducing a version of him from another universe, after his original character died in the film Logan.
Just like other stories, Deadpool & Wolverine isn’t afraid to eliminate alternate versions of Deadpool to raise the stakes, as long as the primary Deadpool survives to keep the story going.
I’ve been thinking about Thor’s arc, and it feels like the MCU could really benefit from exploring something similar to what we saw in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars – maybe even a blend of both! It just feels like a natural direction for the story. But honestly, we’ll just have to wait and see what Marvel has planned as we get closer to the next Avengers films. Only then will we know if this is where they’re headed.
