30 Years Later, Scream Hits No. 9 on Streaming Charts Ahead of Highly Anticipated Sequel

This location is where the story started, and it’s the best place to understand how the franchise evolved. For those who remember the original Scream – a groundbreaking horror film from 1996 – it’s clear the movie redefined the slasher genre.

After thirty years, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of Scream 7 on February 27, 2026. It’s impressive, considering how rare it is for horror movie series to last beyond three films without disappearing, with Saw being a notable exception—it managed to revive itself years later with Saw X.

With the upcoming release of Scream 7, people are rediscovering the first Scream movie. It’s become a hit on Paramount+, currently ranking among the top 10 most streamed films in the US (at number 9) and in multiple other countries.

Scream (1996) Made Horror Look Cool

While Jenna Ortega (known for roles in Wednesday, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and X) is currently the face of the Scream franchise, Neve Campbell established the standard for the leading character, Sidney Prescott, years ago.

In 1996, Neve Campbell starred in Scream alongside a fantastic cast, quickly making it a favorite among horror fans and a major cultural hit. The movie became so popular that Ghostface masks flew off store shelves each Halloween, and everyone started asking, “Do you like scary movies?”

Honestly, this movie was so influential it kicked off an entire parody series! Scary Movie is still considered the best of the best when it comes to spoof films, and I’m so excited to hear they’re bringing it back with Scary Movie 6 – Marlon Wayans really listened to the fans and is giving us exactly what we wanted on June 12, 2026!

Scream 7 Pays More Homage to the Original

No matter how you slice it, Scream became a global and cultural phenomenon right out of the gate.

The original Scream featured a talented cast including Courtney Cox, Matthew Lillard, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, and Drew Barrymore. If you’re curious about how much that first film still influences horror movies today, you only need to look at recent releases to see its impact.

The newest Scream movies feature several actors from the original films alongside Jenna Ortega, starting with Scream (2022). Notably, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette all return, with brief appearances by Drew Barrymore and Matthew Lillard. Lillard’s involvement was even teased in a Super Bowl trailer with a familiar-sounding voice saying, “This is gonna be fun.”

Before you watch Scream 7, it’s a good idea to rewatch the first Scream film – especially if you enjoy scary movies!
