After the huge success of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire in theaters and building on the story from the first season of its series, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s MonsterVerse has grown massively since Gareth Edwards brought Godzilla back to Hollywood in 2014. Now, with Apple TV+ about to release the second season of their popular series, star Wyatt Russell has hinted at when filming will begin for his character’s new spin-off show.
In the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell both portrayed the character Lee Shaw at different points in his life. The show initially left viewers wondering about the older Shaw’s age, but it was later revealed that the younger Shaw spent twenty years lost within the Hollow Earth between 1962 and 1982 without aging. Although the series jumped between time periods, many details of Shaw’s life remained unclear. It appears a new series centered around Wyatt Russell’s portrayal of the character will explore those missing pieces of his history.
Wyatt Russell told MovieWeb that the upcoming series is set to start filming very soon.
I’m really excited to begin working on this project. We’re filming it this year, and it’s fascinating to see how Shaw’s character has developed from my dad’s portrayal. He brings a natural energy and captivating presence to the screen, making you wonder what happened during the years between his arrival from the Hollow Earth and when we see him now.
Russell explained that the new spin-off will build upon the established foundation of the MonsterVerse, continuing the story in a way that feels familiar and consistent with what fans already know.
There’s a huge amount of creative potential here. The world we’re building is expansive, but it also has some built-in boundaries, which is helpful. We’re aware of the dangers that exist within it, and we’re really excited to lean into a fun, 80s-inspired vibe that hasn’t been fully explored in this way before. There are going to be compelling characters and stories to tell. Honestly, I haven’t been this enthusiastic about reading scripts in years! I’m thrilled to dive in and explore everything this project has to offer, because it feels full of possibilities. I’m genuinely very excited about it.
‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Continues to Span the Entire MonsterVerse
The first season of Monarch mainly worked to build the backstory and timeline for Godzilla and Kong. It revisited and tweaked some details from the 2014 Godzilla film and directly led into the introduction of Kong.
The first scene of Monarch featured John Goodman reprising his role as Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island. Randa had been investigating the secretive activities of the Monarch organization until his death in 1973. This established that Kong would eventually appear, though fans didn’t see him until the very end of the first season.

Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will showcase more of Kong, introduce several new Titans, and, of course, feature Godzilla. The future of the Monarch organization, and the entire world, is at risk. Old secrets are resurfacing as a dangerous, legendary Titan emerges from the ocean. The new season promises to build on the character-focused stories and underlying monster mysteries that made Season 1 so compelling. The 10-episode season premieres February 24th on Apple TV.
