A new report confirms that a large-scale Star Wars crossover film, similar to Avengers: Endgame, is still in development, despite earlier reports suggesting it might not happen. When Disney+ launched with The Mandalorian in 2019, viewers didn’t realize it would kickstart a connected universe of shows. Following the first season of The Mandalorian, this interconnected world – now known as the MandoVerse – began to take shape. It was then announced that Dave Filoni would direct a movie intended to be the grand finale of all these projects, effectively serving as Star Wars’ version of an *Avengers: Endgamestyle event.
A new report from industry insider Daniel Richtman suggests the future of the upcoming MandoVerse crossover hinges on the box office performance of The Mandalorian & Grogu movie. If the film is successful in theaters, it will remain a movie. However, if it doesn’t meet expectations, it will instead be released as a limited series on Disney+. This crossover, reportedly titled Heir to the Empire, was previously believed to be cancelled due to the generally underwhelming performance of other MandoVerse projects on Disney+.
There’s currently no confirmation that ‘Ahsoka’ will get a third season, and it might not be made at all. Plus, if the upcoming ‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ movie doesn’t do well, the ‘Heir to the Empire’ film that was planned could be changed into a shorter, limited series instead.
The exciting news isn’t whether this story becomes a limited series or a movie, but that it’s actually happening. There was a lot of uncertainty about whether this project would ever move forward, but it now looks like fans will definitely get to see the story told.
As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I can tell you this feels like a huge turning point for the franchise. For seven years, everything has been building toward what feels like their version of Avengers: Endgame – a massive team-up of all the characters we’ve been following. Honestly, there was a real fear it wouldn’t happen at all, and that made a lot of the previous stories feel… incomplete. Seeing it finally come together is a massive relief and a genuinely exciting moment.
This shows Disney and Lucasfilm are still very confident in the future of the ‘MandoVerse’ and its shows, which is encouraging for Star Wars fans. With Dave Filoni now a co-president of Lucasfilm, he has significant influence over which projects are approved. However, ultimately, Disney has the final say, and if they don’t believe a project will succeed, it won’t move forward, regardless of Filoni or Lucasfilm’s opinion.
Disney appears very confident in Dave Filoni’s vision for the interconnected stories of the Mandalorian universe. This suggests the creative work done so far is promising and hints at a potentially fantastic storyline.
Star Wars hasn’t previously tackled a project quite like Avengers: Endgame. While the Skywalker Saga was a continuous story across multiple films, this is the first time the franchise has united different storylines and characters for one huge finale.
Will the MandoVerse Movie Faithfully Adapt the Heir to the Empire Book?

While not the official name yet, ‘Heir to the Empire’ is a strong possibility for the title of Dave Filoni’s upcoming Star Wars project. If that title is confirmed, fans will be eager to see how closely the movie or series adapts the classic 1991 Timothy Zahn novel of the same name.
As a longtime Star Wars fan, I remember when Heir to the Empire first hit shelves. It was a huge deal – a novel that really expanded the universe beyond the films. What’s fascinating is that it wasn’t just a fun read; it introduced a character, Grand Admiral Thrawn, who became incredibly popular. In fact, George Lucas himself liked elements from the book so much, like the city planet Coruscant, that he incorporated them into the official Star Wars story. It’s a testament to how influential those early Expanded Universe stories could be, even before they were re-branded as Legends.
It’s very unlikely Dave Filoni will directly recreate Heir to the Empire. The book features many characters not yet seen in the Mandalorian universe, and some Mandalorian characters aren’t in the book at all. For instance, the novel prominently includes figures like Talon Karrde, Jorus C’Baoth, as well as Han Solo and Leia Organa.
The upcoming MandoVerse stories will probably be inspired by the general storyline of Heir to the Empire, where the villain Thrawn tries to rebuild the Empire by fighting against the New Republic.
A compelling storyline could focus on cloning. In the novel Heir to the Empire, Grand Admiral Thrawn and the surviving Imperial forces operate out of Mount Tantiss, a secret base housing cloning technology and relics from Emperor Palpatine. This location was already introduced in the Bad Batch series (outside of the main MandoVerse shows), which cleverly prepares it for future appearances.
As a big Star Wars fan, it’s pretty clear Palpatine was using cloning – we saw that with Snoke and his return in the sequels. I’m really hoping the upcoming crossover between The Mandalorian and other shows finally explains how all that happened, and I have a feeling Grand Admiral Thrawn might be the key to unlocking that mystery. It would make a lot of sense if he was involved in making Palpatine’s plan work!
The story could also include creatures called ysalamiri. These reptile-like animals have a unique ability: they can block Force powers. When ysalamiri are nearby, characters who use the Force can’t access their abilities.
Star Wars fans are likely to finally get the epic conclusion they’ve been waiting for, similar to Avengers: Endgame. While it might be released as a Disney+ series rather than a movie, the story will reportedly still be told.
