Doctor Who: The Movie Restored in 4K for Blu-ray Re-Release

Good news for fans! The 1996 Doctor Who movie is getting a fresh look with a brand new 4K restoration. It’s been announced on the official Doctor Who website that both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray versions will be available for pre-order in the near future.

The long-awaited re-release of Doctor Who: The Movie is exciting news for all fans, and especially for those who like to collect everything! This marks the first time the film has been fully restored. In just three weeks, all 219 original film reels – totaling almost 200,000 feet of film – were scanned and carefully restored by the renowned Paul Vanezis.

Released in 1996, Doctor Who: The Movie—directed by Geoffrey Sax and written by Matthew Jacobs—received a mixed reaction from both critics and viewers. The film introduced Paul McGann, from Liverpool, as the Eighth Doctor, a role he only played in three episodes across the entire Doctor Who series.

The Doctor faced a dangerous enemy determined to steal his ability to regenerate and even his current life. Luckily, the Doctor managed to stop this from happening, though he didn’t make a lasting impression on anyone he encountered, including his brief companion, Grace, played by Daphne Ashbrook.

When Doctor Who: The Movie came out in 1996, it received mostly negative reviews. While the film had better production quality than the original series, many critics found the story weak. As of today, it has a score of just 49% on Rotten Tomatoes’ audience review rating, based on over 5,000 reviews.

What’s Next for the Doctor Who Franchise?

The latest season of Doctor Who concluded in May 2025 with the episode “The Reality War.” This finale saw Ncuti Gatwa finish his run as the Fifteenth Doctor and surprisingly brought Billie Piper back into the show, hinting she’ll be playing the Sixteenth Doctor.

Soon after Billie Piper rejoined Doctor Who, the show’s creator and head writer was asked about her character’s role. When asked if this was the same Rose Tyler, Davies jokingly responded, “I have no idea.”

While we don’t yet know when the next season of Doctor Who will air, the Doctor Who universe is still growing with new content. The recent release in late 2025 received positive reviews from critics, but fans had a more mixed reaction.

For the first time ever, you’ll be able to pre-order Doctor Who: The Movie on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray later this year.
