Margot Robbie, who’s currently starring in a new version of Wuthering Heights, is a major star known for both popular and critically acclaimed roles. But her career didn’t take off immediately. Before landing memorable parts in films like The Wolf of Wall Street and Suicide Squad, she appeared in projects that didn’t last very long. One notable U.S. role was as Laura Cameron in the 2011 TV series Pan Am, which aired on ABC for just one season. The show, featuring Christina Ricci, took place in the early 1960s and followed the stories of airline pilots and flight attendants. With only 14 episodes, Pan Am is a fairly short series. Although it was cancelled after one season, Margot Robbie had already found success with the long-running Australian show Neighbors. She starred in over 350 episodes of Neighbors, which would take a significant amount of time to watch.

Today, Mad Men is considered one of the best TV shows ever made, but it was a risky move when it first aired. Though often compared to Mad Men, the ABC series Pan Am had a lot more immediate pressure to succeed. While some considered it a copycat, Pan Am garnered generally positive reviews and managed to establish its own identity. It debuted in the same month as NBC’s The Playboy Club, which covered similar ground but was quickly canceled after just three episodes.

Shows like Masters of Sex and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, while set in comparable time periods to Mad Men, successfully learned from its example and established their own unique identities. AMC also created Halt and Catch Fire, another period drama, but this one focused on the 1980s tech industry.

A Frustrating Finale

Fans were disappointed when Pan Am wasn’t picked up for another season, as it left many stories unfinished. Unlike some canceled shows that feel complete looking back, Pan Am ended with several plot threads dangling. However, it fared better than The Playboy Club, which had even fewer episodes make it to air.

It’s surprising that Margot Robbie hasn’t been back on television recently, especially now that the difference between movies and TV shows is fading, with big stars appearing in both and TV shows having huge budgets. While she did appear in one episode of Dollface, a show she also helped produce, her focus seems to be shifting towards producing films and TV series, something she’s been doing more of in recent years.
