First published in April 2020, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End appears in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine. Written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, the story follows Frieren, a strong elven mage who is over 1000 years old. She previously played a key role in defeating a devastating Demon King who almost destroyed the world.

Years after the passing of her friends Himmel and Heiter, Frieren embarks on a new adventure with Fern, her student, and Stark, a skilled warrior. Through Frieren’s long life, the story thoughtfully explores themes of life, death, and the connections between people.

The series is generally thoughtful and takes its time, but it’s also balanced with humor, action, and romance. It’s been highly praised by both viewers and critics. The original manga received Japan’s Manga Taisho award in 2021, and the anime won Best Drama at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, though it didn’t win Anime of the Year.

The anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is now available to stream on popular platforms like Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Hulu. If you’d like to read the original manga, VIZ Media offers an English translation.
