Okay, so the Super Bowl ad for the new Mandalorian movie wasn’t a huge hit with a lot of people, but the latest trailer? Wow, that really got me excited again! It finally gives us a much clearer idea of what the story’s going to be about. Basically, the New Republic is going to ask Din Djarin to stop the last bits of the Empire from rising up again, and we’re going to see Grogu really start to grow up and become more independent. I’m so ready for this!
As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I’m really excited about The Mandalorian and Grogu hitting theaters – it’s the first big screen adventure since The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019. There’s a lot riding on this movie, and honestly, on Star Wars: Starfighter too. If these don’t perform well, it might be a very long time before we see another Star Wars film, or maybe never. But the trailer gave me something extra to cheer about: it looks like they’re bringing back a real focus on alien characters, which has been missing a bit lately. That’s a huge part of what made Star Wars special to begin with, and I’m thrilled to see it returning!
Aliens Were Highlights of the Early Star Wars Films
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always loved how central aliens are to the whole story. George Lucas really envisioned this galaxy far, far away as being full of weird and wonderful creatures. You really get a sense of that in the original trilogy, especially in the cantina scene from A New Hope. It’s amazing what he and his team accomplished with the effects technology they had back then – that bar was packed with some truly bizarre aliens!
With a bigger budget, the next two Star Wars movies became more imaginative, featuring diverse aliens like Jabba the Hutt, Yoda, and the Ewoks. The prequel trilogy took this even further, using new computer-generated imagery (CGI) to bring to life any creature George Lucas and his team at Lucasfilm could envision.
Since Disney bought Star Wars, alien characters have appeared less frequently in the films. While the sequel trilogy still included some aliens, there were fewer than in the prequel films. There weren’t as many alien characters overall, and no single alien stood out as prominently as characters like those in the original trilogy.
The move of Star Wars to streaming television highlighted a trend: a decrease in the use of alien characters. Disney+’s live-action Star Wars series featured fewer aliens, and when they did appear, they were often played by humans with very little makeup. Disney even changed the established look of some alien species to make them appear more human.
Notably, Andor featured a cast almost entirely composed of humans and droids. This was partly a creative decision – showrunner Tony Gilroy felt focusing on humans would enhance the storytelling – but also reflected the show’s more limited budget compared to the films. Creating alien characters convincingly – using makeup, puppets, or computer effects – is expensive, so it’s often simpler to leave them out.
The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Trailer Prioritized Aliens Over Humans
The upcoming film featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu appears to be bringing back a wider variety of alien creatures to the screen. The trailer showed not only Grogu, but also familiar species like Hutts, along with a Kyuzo, Anzellans, a white dragonsnake, a Lasat, a Mantellian Savrip, a Rodian mother with her child, and several other new and unidentified aliens.
The trailer featured very few human characters. Besides Din Djarin, only two humans were clearly shown: one unnamed character and Hemky Madera playing an Imperial warlord. While the full movie will likely include more humans, it suggests they won’t be as central to the story as in many other Star Wars films.
This series successfully captures the spirit of the original Star Wars films while also utilizing the resources available for The Mandalorian and Grogu. While some fans were initially unimpressed with the first trailer, the latest one feels much more like a grand cinematic experience, largely thanks to the variety of alien characters featured.
After a few projects that didn’t appeal to everyone and a seven-year break from movies, The Mandalorian and Grogu is Disney’s opportunity to show that people are still excited to see Star Wars films in theaters. Given how important this movie is, it’s a good strategy to build on what made the original Star Wars so beloved.
