Kohei Horikoshi’s popular anime series concluded in 2024, with the final episode airing in December 2025. While this marked the end of a significant period for the shonen genre, the story continued through a prequel spin-off called My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, created by Hideyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court.
The series Vigilantes is rare because it’s officially part of the My Hero Academia story, with the original creator, Horikoshi, overseeing every chapter. While it eventually connects to Izuku Midoriya’s story, Vigilantes mainly focuses on a completely new group of characters, alongside some familiar faces from My Hero Academia.
Eraser Head Finally Gets a Much-Needed Backstory
I’ve always found Shota Aizawa, the homeroom teacher in My Hero Academia, to be a really interesting character. While he can fight as Eraser Head, he mostly focuses on training the next generation of heroes at UA. He’s been doing that ever since he himself graduated, though I remember learning from Vigilantes that he took a year off to focus solely on hero work before that.
Readers got a surprising look at Eraser Head in the Vigilantes series, seeing him act as recklessly as he warns his students not to. The series also revealed a sad story about his past, including details about the death of his close friend, Oboro Shirakumo, as shown in the My Hero Academia manga. It’s fun to spot Aizawa’s friend and colleague, Present Mic, appearing throughout Vigilantes as well.
Best Jeanist Is Key to Eraser Head’s Past in Vigilantes
While Best Jeanist isn’t the strongest hero in My Hero Academia, he’s definitely the most fashionable. He brings that same sense of style to his fighting, expertly controlling threads with his Quirk. In fact, All For One was so intimidated by the skill needed to use it that he didn’t even try to steal it! Best Jeanist was also a key player in the anime’s Final War Saga, providing crucial support to help the younger heroes succeed.
Similar to the series focusing on Eraser Head and Present Mic, Vigilantes delves into the history of a young Tsunagu Hakamada. Best Jeanist plays a significant role throughout the story, from the beginning to the very end. Viewers enjoyed his refined fighting style and effectiveness in capturing villains. Best Jeanist will continue to be featured in this prequel series, including upcoming seasons.
Mirko Is Still Just as Fierce in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes
Wow, Mirko, or Rumi Usagiyama as some know her, is just an absolute powerhouse in My Hero Academia! While we didn’t really get to know her until the end of the Pro Hero arc, she’s quickly become one of my favorite heroes. Seriously, she took down multiple High-End Nomus all by herself! And let’s not forget she saved Endeavor’s life and almost managed to halt Tomura Shigaraki’s rise to power. She’s a total game-changer.
Mirko played a crucial role in the Final War, potentially saving the lives of the UA’s Big 3 and Bakugo. The Vigilantes series delved into her past, showing a difficult but formative childhood. The spin-off highlights that Mirko always possessed the bold and assertive personality that would eventually make her so famous.
MHA: Vigilantes Makes Edgeshot’s Character Easier to Understand
Fans of My Hero Academia were surprised when Edgeshot heroically saved Bakugo’s life, actually sewing his damaged heart back together. What made it even more shocking was that Edgeshot and Bakugo hadn’t really spoken before, making this a huge and unexpected sacrifice. To do it, Edgeshot put his own life on the line, nearly disappearing in the process.
Before becoming the hero Edgeshot, Shinya Kamihara worked with Best Jeanist and formed a group called the “Textile Arts Association.” Edgeshot’s Quirk, Pliabody, is incredibly precise, like skilled needlework, and he often fights alongside Best Jeanist against villains in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. He plays a key role in the Naruhata Lockdown Arc, specifically targeting the main character, Koichi Haimawari.
Stain’s Many Transformations Are Revealed in Vigilantes
In My Hero Academia, the villain Stain ironically admired All Might, and this admiration fueled his extreme actions. He believed the golden age of heroes was ending, so he took it upon himself to eliminate some. This led to encounters with Deku and ultimately, All Might. While Stain reappeared during the Final War Arc, his attempt to change things didn’t succeed.
The story of Chizome Akaguro, briefly touched upon in Vigilantes, reveals a complex character. He initially wanted to be a licensed hero, but later became a vigilante. Unlike Stain, who targeted heroes, Chizome, operating as “Stendahl,” focused on capturing villains. He actually saves the life of the story’s main character, and is later influenced by the villain to ultimately become known as Stain.
Fat Gum’s Vigilantes Cameo Is Limited to 1 Major Battle
Fat Gum played a key role in helping Eijiro Kirishima become the hero he was meant to be, bringing both a cool style and powerful energy to Kirishima’s development. He was crucial in the rise of Red Riot, even landing a powerful punch that, combined with Kirishima’s attacks, completely overwhelmed the villains. Sadly, Fat Gum was one of the heroes who fell during the Final War Saga—though it was expected that some villains would win in the end.
While Vigilantes explores the backstories of characters like Eraser Head and Mirko in detail, it only briefly touches on Taishiro Toyomitsu’s past, though his appearances were intriguing and connected to the main story. Similar to many characters in My Hero Academia, Fat Gum was motivated by All Might to become a better hero. His story in Vigilantes is fairly brief and doesn’t have many memorable moments, aside from the exciting fight with the mechs.
Midnight Is Effectively a Main Character in Vigilantes
Midnight is a complicated character in My Hero Academia. While some find her portrayal overly sexualized, her story has genuine emotional depth and serves an important purpose in the overall narrative. The series showed Midnight’s friendships with other pro heroes like Present Mic and Eraser Head, but the Vigilantes spin-off revealed the true strength of those connections.
The deaths of Oboro Shirakumo deeply affected Shota Aizawa and Hizashi Yamada, and their emotional responses to Kurogiri showed this. However, the series didn’t explore how much Midnight grieved for her friend. The Vigilantes manga continued to feature Midnight prominently, essentially making her a key character throughout the entire story.
Ingenium Celebrates the Name Tenya Ida Inherits
Tenya Ida became Turbo Hero, taking the name after his brother, Tensei, was severely injured by the villain Stain. Tensei urged Tenya to live up to the title, and Tenya worked hard to fully develop his Engine Quirk. While Tensei only reappeared briefly in the epilogue of My Hero Academia as a support hero for his brother, the series Vigilantes repeatedly shows that Tenya was right to believe in Tensei all along.
Ingenium plays a key role in the My Hero Academia spin-off, starting with his first encounter and growing bond with Koichi Himawara, and continuing through several brave actions throughout the story. While Tenya assisted his friend in defeating Dabi, even surpassing his brother’s achievements,…
All Might Serves Both a Real & Symbolic Purpose
All Might’s appearance in MHA: Vigilantes was particularly important, and not just because it showed him at the height of his power. Fans love Toshinori Yagi and were excited to see more of his history with One For All. While My Hero Academia explored much of that story, Vigilantes focused more on showcasing his strength. Even after a serious injury from All For One, All Might continued to operate at his best for many years, including during the events of Vigilantes.
I’ve always loved how All Might would show up at just the right moment, really delivering in those big, climactic fights! It was so cool to see how his bond with Naomasa, who he affectionately calls Tsukauchi-kun in My Hero Academia, first developed. And you know, looking back at Vigilantes, you could really start to see the seeds of All Might passing on One For All to Deku – it was clear even then that maintaining that power was going to be a huge struggle for him.
Deku’s Mom Runs Into MHA: Vigilantes’ Main Character Koichi
Izuku Midoriya, also known as Deku, was born to Inko and Hisashi Midoriya. However, his father plays no part in either the My Hero Academia or Vigilantes stories. While the creator, Kohei Horikoshi, hinted in 2018 that Deku’s father would be revealed, only his mother, Inko, is currently known. She consistently supported Deku’s dream of becoming a hero like All Might, even after learning he didn’t have a Quirk, and always remained a steadfast presence in his life.
Throughout My Hero Academia, Inko Midoriya has shown up at important moments. Many fans still recall the powerful scene where All Might bowed deeply before her, asking for forgiveness for putting her son, Deku, in danger. Because the stories of My Hero Academia and Vigilantes are set only nine years apart, viewers often expected Deku to make at least a brief appearance in the other series. The closest they got was Inko receiving help from Koichi, a character from Vigilantes.
