3 Years Later, the MCU Can’t Ignore Its Biggest Multiverse Saga Cliffhanger

Marvel Studios has several important anniversaries on the horizon. The biggest will be in May 2028, celebrating two decades since the release of Iron Man, which launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, a significant milestone recently passed with little attention – an event the franchise can’t ignore.

Marvel Studios kicked off Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2023 with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, hoping to make a big impact. The movie pitted Ant-Man against the formidable Kang the Conqueror, and marketing suggested the highest stakes yet for the characters. However, the final film didn’t quite deliver on that promise. Instead of consistent tension, the movie was filled with jokes and awkward moments, culminating in a somewhat anticlimactic victory where Kang was defeated by an army of ants.

Kang’s first official appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn’t quite what fans hoped for. However, the movie did leave Scott with a sense that his battles to protect the multiverse were far from over.

Honestly, ever since Kang’s story in Quantumania wrapped up, that ending – which was pretty impactful at the time – feels like it’s been lost in the shuffle. Marvel’s already moved on to hinting at even bigger things! But I think they need to revisit some of those earlier plot points. To really make this Multiverse Saga work, they’ve gotta tie up all the loose ends and make sure everything connects – it’s a long journey, and they can’t just skip parts!

Ant-Man 3 Should Be as Important as Any Other Multiverse Saga Project

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) often highlights key characters and storylines leading up to its big team-up movies. For example, before Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: The Winter Soldier had a scene after the credits that introduced the Maximoff twins, who later became important in the fight against Ultron.

The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, seems to be building towards the introduction of Doctor Doom, just like Marvel’s other 2025 releases. Each of those films used its end-credit scenes to hint at Doctor Doom’s arrival, suggesting the characters featured in those scenes will play a role in addressing his future actions.

As a huge Marvel fan, I always figured Scott Lang was a shoo-in to play a big part in what was originally going to be called Doomsday. Now that the next Avengers movie is titled The Kang Dynasty, things have shifted a bit. He’s still going to be in the film, thankfully, but it sounds like he might not be a central player in the main action anymore. It’s a little disappointing, but we’ll see what happens!

It’s normal for superhero movies to juggle a lot of plot points and characters. However, the biggest issue with Doomsday isn’t the story itself, but how it downplays Scott Lang’s experiences after facing a major threat alongside the Avengers. Quantumania doesn’t need to resolve the entire Multiverse Saga, but it should be remembered for its character work, rather than being overlooked.
