The second season of HBO’s House of the Dragon finished airing in August 2024. Fans have been waiting through all of 2025 for more, but the new season is almost here! The show’s official X account just shared a poster announcing that Season 3 will premiere this summer.
Although there weren’t any new Game of Thrones prequel series in 2024, 2026 will bring plenty. This Sunday, HBO will air the final episode of Season 1 for the new prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The show takes place a century after House of the Dragon and a century before Game of Thrones. HBO is cleverly using the success of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – the first season has been very popular – to build excitement for Season 3 of House of the Dragon. They’re releasing a new poster and a short teaser tomorrow, which they’re also sharing on X.
A Teaser for ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Drops on February 19
A new poster for the show features Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy) wearing a crown and standing amongst the sharp blades of the Iron Throne. She was last seen battling her half-brother, King Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), for power. Those familiar with George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood, which the show is based on, might have an idea of what’s to come and what the poster signifies. But for everyone else, expect plenty of surprises!
Although the first season of House of the Dragon received a lot of positive attention, the second season wasn’t quite as well-received. This was partly because the show started to deviate significantly from the original books, which disappointed many fans, including author George R.R. Martin. Another factor was that HBO shortened the season from ten episodes to eight, causing the story to end sooner than expected. Hopefully, the third season will get the show back on track.

HBO has announced that House of the Dragon will conclude after four seasons, with the final season expected to premiere in 2028 due to the show’s complex production. To keep Westeros content coming, HBO is also preparing a new season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for 2027. This second show is less expensive to make, allowing HBO to release a *Game of Thronesrelated series every year.
