If you enjoyed the realistic, found-footage style of End of Watch and want a supernatural twist, Shudder has a new movie you’ll likely love. This crime thriller, debuting next month on the streaming service, follows two police officers whose attempt to hide a “tragic accident” leads to terrifying, otherworldly events.
Shudder has released the official trailer for Bodycam, which is set to release on the streamer on Mar. 13. As the footage teases, the film follows two police officers who, after mistakenly shooting a man and his infant child, try to cover up the accident. However, their attempts at police corruption are interrupted by the supernatural, as what appears to be a cult-like army begins to hunt them down. The film appears to be told entirely from the perspective of the officers’ bodycams, creating for a tense and personal atmosphere from the jump. Read the official synopsis:
A routine domestic disturbance call turns deadly when a situation quickly spirals out of control for two police officers. Afraid of the fallout, they try to hide what happened, but soon discover they aren’t the only ones who witnessed the tragic event.
As a huge horror fan, I was really excited to check out Bodycam. It features Jaime Callica, Sean Rogerson, Catherine Lough Haggquist, Angel Prater, and Keegan Connor Tracy. It’s directed by Brandon Christensen, who I already loved from his work on The Puppetman and Superhost – he also co-wrote the script with Ryan Christensen. Brandon was a busy guy on this one, also producing alongside Chris Ball and Kurtis David Harder. Kerry Cooper, Ty Sivertsen, Andy Thompson, James Norrie, and Nina Kolokouri all served as executive producers, which shows how much collaboration went into making it.
‘Bodycam’ Reactions After Popcorn Frights Premiere
I’ve been following the buzz around Bodycam, and even though full reviews aren’t out yet, reactions started popping up after its premiere at the Popcorn Frights Film Festival. From what I’ve seen on Letterboxd, most people seem to be enjoying it – a lot of ratings are three stars or higher. One reviewer described it as a cool mix of Training Day and H.P. Lovecraft, though they did mention it felt a bit lengthy and repetitive. Still, they thought it was a really strong POV/found footage horror film. Another user, Cameron Young, even gave it four out of five stars, saying it’s unlike anything they’ve ever seen!
This movie is unlike anything you’ve seen before. It’s genuinely frightening, but also explores the disturbing ways people can lose their compassion when involved in harmful systems – specifically, the film focuses on policing. Considering the limited budget, the special effects are remarkably well done.
The found footage thriller Bodycam didn’t receive universal praise, with many users on Letterboxd expressing disappointment. One reviewer gave it two and a half stars, acknowledging the film’s ambition but suggesting it would have been more effective as a short segment within an anthology like V/H/S. Viewers can decide for themselves when Bodycam becomes available on streaming services starting March 13th.
