The new Mandalorian & Grogu movie from Lucasfilm, coming this summer, will be more of a character-driven story than a galaxy-spanning epic like some other Star Wars films. While the Empire will be involved and we can expect to see some returning characters, the movie will primarily focus on Din Djarin and Grogu. However, the filmmakers need to avoid repeating familiar storylines to make the movie truly successful.
The latest trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu reveals more about the movie’s plot. Din Djarin and Grogu will be on a quest to find a member of the Hutt family, traveling to different planets along the way. Like all adventures in the Star Wars universe, they’re sure to encounter plenty of fascinating creatures when the film releases on May 22nd.
The Star Wars series is well-known for its creative character designs, and the Mos Eisley Cantina in A New Hope really set the stage for a diverse and imaginative universe. While The Mandalorian & Grogu will undoubtedly introduce new characters and worlds, it risks becoming repetitive by overly relying on the appeal of ‘the cute baby’ trope.
The Mandalorian & Grogu Features One Too Many Babies

No one, not even those in charge at Lucasfilm, predicted that Grogu – nicknamed “Baby Yoda” – would become so popular. In the first season of The Mandalorian, he became a central object of desire, with the remnants of the Empire desperately trying to capture him due to his powerful abilities. Din Djarin couldn’t bring himself to hand the child over to them, so he decided to protect and raise him instead.
Initially, the new pairing was charming, and they had a genuine connection that the franchise really needed. However, like many likable characters in Star Wars, their moment didn’t last. Season 2 of The Mandalorian focused heavily on separating the two leads, but the spin-off series, The Book of Boba Fett, essentially reversed that emotional decision.
Despite the mixed reaction to the third season of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm appears to be continuing with similar approaches. The latest trailer for The Mandalorian & Grogu includes a scene with a baby Rodian and its mother being threatened, seemingly intended as a lighthearted moment when Grogu steals the baby’s customized stroller. However, this scene feels unnecessary and doesn’t quite work.
Instead of admitting their errors, Lucasfilm seems determined to support any new character that gains popularity, regardless of its long-term potential. It feels like it will take a beloved character like Grogu failing to resonate with audiences – similar to how the Ewoks were eventually viewed – for the company to understand that appealing characters can develop into complex and engaging ones.
