Originally, The Fantastic Four: First Steps nearly included an extra scene after the credits to hint at Chris Evans returning as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ cut post-credits scene would have teed up Steve Rogers’ MCU return
In March 2025, a source known as MyTimeToShineHello reported that Chris Evans would be involved with The Fantastic Four: First Steps. But just two months later, the same source stated that Evans wouldn’t be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after all, even though he had filmed some scenes.
I was so excited to learn from MyTimeToShineHello’s post on X that if plans had gone forward, we would have seen a fantastic reveal at the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps! Apparently, the second post-credits scene would have shown us that Steve Rogers, Peggy Carter, and their son were all living on Earth-828. It would have been amazing to see that connection!
Rumors began circulating in December 2024, reported by industry publications, that Chris Evans would reprise his role as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios didn’t officially confirm his return until a year later, when he appeared prominently in the first trailer for the movie.
In January, directors Anthony and Joe Russo, known for their work on Doomsday, revealed that Steve Rogers will be crucial to the upcoming Avengers movie. They emphasized how important Steve is to both the Avengers team and the overall story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stating they couldn’t imagine the story unfolding without him playing a key part.
MyTimeToShineHello shared that Chris Evans’ Captain America will appear in a storyline where Thor and Steve Rogers are searching for Loki. They also mentioned that Thor and Captain America are already aboard the Fantastic Four’s ship with Doctor Doom before it officially enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which was hinted at in the end credits of the Thunderbolts movie.
Steve Rogers and Thor share a fantastic relationship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Their scenes together are often funny and heartwarming, like the moment in Avengers: Infinity War when they playfully complimented each other’s new looks.
Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth will be back for Avengers: Doomsday, and they won’t be alone. Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, and Letitia Wright are also returning as their popular Marvel characters: Captain America (Sam Wilson), Ant-Man (Scott Lang), Shang-Chi, Loki, and Black Panther (Shuri), along with other stars.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
