Most years, lots of romantic comedies are released, but many don’t get much attention. While rom-coms with famous actors or based on popular books—like The Notebook and Crazy Rich Asians—usually succeed, the truly great ones are often the lesser-known, hidden gems.
Romantic comedies don’t usually require huge budgets, which is why there’s a steady stream of independent films in the genre. Many of today’s best rom-coms, like Set It Up, Rye Lane, and I Want You Back, are made this way. And one recent film is a particularly fantastic, yet surprisingly underappreciated, example.
Plus One Is A Great Romantic Comedy
The movie Plus One, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019, quickly gained popularity. It tells the story of Alice Mori (Maya Erskine) and Ben King (Jack Quaid), two friends who decide to attend weddings together as each other’s dates, and develop romantic feelings in the process.
The ‘friends to lovers’ storyline isn’t groundbreaking – it’s a classic romantic comedy setup. But this film stands out because it’s exceptionally well-done. The actors have great chemistry, the writing is witty and smart, and the characters feel genuinely relatable.
Plus One has received very positive reviews, earning an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics particularly enjoyed how the film leaned into familiar romantic comedy tropes, giving the genre a fresh boost. It’s a movie that romantic comedy fans are likely to enjoy.
The Hidden Gem Rom-Com Has A Great Cast
Much of the praise for Plus One is due to its fantastic cast. Maya Erskine and Jack Quaid, the lead actors, have wonderful chemistry and are captivating to watch. But they’re not the only talented performers in the film – the supporting cast is also excellent.
Beyond the leads, Plus One boasts a fantastic supporting cast. Ed Begley Jr. is reliably excellent, Rosalind Chao gives a strong performance, Beck Bennett provides plenty of laughs, and Peerey Reeves is dependable. The film also includes appearances from Finn Wittrock, Emma Bell, and other talented actors, completing a well-rounded ensemble for this romantic comedy.
Plus One is a truly excellent romantic comedy and deserves more recognition. It’s a standout film for both Quaid and Erskine, and a real highlight in their already impressive careers.
