After almost 22 years, the popular animated series Static Shock from DC Comics is making a big return with streaming. Though the show was well-received and developed a dedicated fanbase, it hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves, largely due to inconsistent support from DC for the overall Static Shock franchise.
Starting March 1st, you’ll be able to watch Static Shock on Tubi, along with several other popular shows from Cartoon Network and WB. Tubi is adding Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Ben 10, Codename Kids Next Door, Dexter’s Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold to its streaming library as well.
Tubi makes the offer even better because it’s a free streaming service, letting fans easily rewatch their favorite shows like Static Shock and other classic cartoons.
Why Static Shock Stands Among The Greatest DC Animated Series Of All Time
First airing in 2000, Static Shock was inspired by the Milestone comic book created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Christopher Priest, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle. What made the Static Shock TV show special was that two of the original comic creators – McDuffie and Cowan – were directly involved in its production and served as consultants.
Because Cowan and McDuffie were already collaborating with the team on other DC animated shows, Static Shock rapidly rose to become one of the most popular and highly regarded DC television series ever made.
Similar to the Milestone Comics it drew from, Static was a groundbreaking series that blended traditional superhero action with well-developed characters. One of the reasons the show holds up so well – even 26 years later – is its willingness to address important topics in a way that respected its young audience. As a result, it still feels like a product of the early 2000s, but remains relatable today.
Despite receiving great reviews and a loyal following, the show Static Shock was cancelled after only 52 episodes in 2004. While that’s a good amount, many fans believe the series had much more to offer.
Static’s Future is Looking Bright
DC Comics hasn’t always consistently supported Static, but they’ve made a strong effort to champion him and the other Milestone heroes recently. These renewed efforts to bring Static and his fellow heroes back into the main DC universe have revitalized the characters.
Even though the Static Shock cartoon isn’t currently available on streaming, fans can still enjoy plenty of stories about Virgil and his friends.
With new comics being released and the animated series back on streaming services, now is a fantastic time to be a fan of Static Shock from DC Comics.
