Johnny Depp’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ Performance Is “Amazing,” Says Rupert Grint

Later this year, Johnny Depp will star as Ebenezer Scrooge in a new film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, A Christmas Carol. Directed by Ti West, this version promises a fresh take on the beloved story. Early photos from the set show Depp looking drastically different, and his fellow actors are already impressed with his performance. Rupert Grint, known for his role in the Harry Potter films, who plays Bob Cratchit, told The Hollywood Reporter that the film feels both faithful to the original story and uniquely directed by West. He also praised Depp, saying he’s bringing something truly interesting to the role.

The upcoming film, Ebenezer, boasts a stellar cast, including Johnny Depp, Rupert Grint, Daisy Ridley, Sam Claflin, Tramell Tillman, Andrea Riseborough, and the legendary Ian McKellan, who plays Jacob Marley, Ebenezer Scrooge’s former business partner. Grint expressed his excitement about working with McKellan, calling him “iconic.”

For Johnny Depp, the film Ebenezer could be the project that restarts his career. He’s faced setbacks in recent years, including unsuccessful films and a highly publicized legal battle with Amber Heard. This led to him being replaced in the Fantastic Beasts series after only two movies; Mads Mikkelsen took over his role as Gellert Grindelwald in the third and final film, The Secrets of Dumbledore. Given that Fantastic Beasts originated from the Harry Potter universe, it’s an interesting coincidence that Depp is now working with Rupert Grint (who played Ron Weasley in Harry Potter).

Keep an eye out for Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, which will be released later this year. And if you’re curious about what else Tom Felton (Grint) has been working on, his latest movie, Nightborn, recently premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Hanna Bergholm’s film, Nightborn, follows a married couple who relocate to a remote Finnish forest cottage, a place where the wife, Saga (Seidi Haarla), grew up. They are thrilled to learn they’re expecting a baby, but their joy turns to concern as their child exhibits strange and unsettling behavior, potentially suggesting a demonic presence. This puts a significant strain on their relationship and everything else in their lives.

I’m a big fan of practical effects, so I was really excited to see Rupert Grint take on the role of Jon in this film. He actually told me the main reason he wanted to work with the director, Bergholm, was because she often uses puppets in her movies! He said being on set with a puppet is just more fun. Apparently, he had some experience with them on the Harry Potter films, and he feels like you don’t see enough physical effects in movies these days. Everyone jumps to CGI, but there’s something special about actually having a tangible object on set.

In the show Nightborn, a puppet was used to represent the unusual child of Jon and Saga. Actor Rupert Grint explained that the effect was achieved practically, using multiple versions of the puppet. They even built an animatronic version, and different stages of the puppet were used to show the baby growing and changing over time.

Grint has worked on several projects with a creepy or unsettling baby theme, including the Apple TV+ series Servant. While Nightborn doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, there’s hope it will be picked up by a network soon. He’ll also star in Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 13, 2026.
