Another ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Reboot Is on the Way

Sony Pictures is bringing back Charlie’s Angels for another movie. Deadline reports that Peter Chiarelli, known for writing popular films like The Proposal, Now You See Me 2, and Crazy Rich Asians, will be writing the script. He also recently worked on Sony’s new animated film, GOAT, which just came out.

Here’s what we know so far about the new Charlie’s Angels movie. It’s still in the early stages, but it will likely follow the familiar formula: three women work as private investigators for a rich and unseen man named Charles Townsend, who communicates with them only through a speakerphone. They’ll be solving crimes, fighting villains, and going on risky undercover operations.

The original Charlie’s Angels aired on ABC from 1976 to 1981 and quickly became a cultural hit, launching the careers of stars like Farah Fawcett and Cheryl Ladd. Sony later produced two movies in 2000 and 2003, featuring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu. Both films did well, particularly the first one. ABC attempted a reboot in 2011 with Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly, and Rachael Taylor, but it was canceled after just four episodes. Most recently, Elizabeth Banks directed a new film version in 2019 starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. While it didn’t receive positive reviews or perform well in theaters, Banks has publicly accepted responsibility for its outcome.

Could the new ‘Charlie’s Angels’ movie follow up on one of the old ones?

ABC

We don’t yet know which actors will star in Chiarelli’s upcoming film. Unlike other franchises, this one features completely new agents with new identities each time it’s rebooted – it won’t be the same actors playing established characters. This means anyone could be cast, and the possibilities are endless.

The new movie might even feature characters from a previous film. Fans have recently suggested a third Charlie’s Angels movie starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu, but the cast hasn’t officially agreed to anything. Lucy Liu explained in 2024 that she usually doesn’t hear about potential projects until they’re actually happening. While she wouldn’t rule out a revival, she’s not expecting one and says you never know what might happen until it does.
