Since its release on February 13th, “Joe’s College Road Trip” is currently the most popular movie on Netflix in the United States. The R-rated comedy is performing better than other films like the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” (2025), “A Father’s Miracle” (2026), “The Black Phone” (2021), “Homefront” (2013), and “Flipped” (2010).
Perry wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the film, which centers on Madea’s brother, Joe, and his grandson B.J.’s college road trip. This movie is the first in the Madea series to really focus on Joe, and it’s proven popular with Netflix viewers.
Tyler Perry stars as both Madea and Joe in Joe’s College Road Trip, alongside Jermaine Harris as B.J. Amber Reign, Bethany Anne Lind, and Jeremy Gimenez also appear in the movie, which is the fourteenth film in the Madea series.
Tyler Perry’s newest film seems to be hitting it off with audiences, though critics haven’t quite made up their minds yet. Generally, Perry’s movies, including the Madea films, don’t receive positive reviews from critics. For instance, Straw received mostly negative feedback, resulting in a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
As of today, the movie Joe College Road Trip only has four reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t enough for an official score. Interestingly, three of those reviews are positive (‘fresh’), while just one is negative (‘rotten’), suggesting it might be better received than some of the director’s other recent films.
New movies by Tyler Perry often quickly become popular on Netflix, but the real measure of how well a film resonates with audiences comes later. If Tyler Perry’s Joe’s College Road Trip continues to perform strongly in the Netflix top 10 in the coming weeks, it will likely lead to more projects between Perry and the streaming service.
