Michael J. Fox is back on television in the new Apple TV+ series Shrinking, and he’s reunited with Ted McGinley, who is best known for his role in Married…With Children.
In a recent interview with Today, McGinley described the experience of working alongside Michael J. Fox when he made a guest appearance on the show’s third season.
McGinley and the actor didn’t share any scenes together, which gave McGinley a chance to observe Fox performing. He explained that he preferred to simply observe from the sidelines, saying, “I like to go and just sit in the corner and watch.”
During the interview, it was clear that McGinley deeply admired and respected Fox. He described working with the Back to the Future star as “incredibly special.”
Although the two actors hadn’t shared a project, they often crossed paths on the studio lot where their shows were filmed. McGinley greatly admired Fox, especially his dedication and skill while continuing to act despite living with Parkinson’s disease.
He said:
Seeing what Michael deals with every day, and then watching him perform – he’s incredibly quick-witted, but it clearly takes a lot out of him.
He also spoke highly of Michael J. Fox and the $2 billion Fox has collected to support Parkinson’s research, after being diagnosed with the condition in the 1990s.
I was so excited to see Michael J. Fox appear with Harrison Ford! Ford is playing a psychologist, Dr. Paul Rhoades, on this really great show that even got an Emmy nomination, which is fantastic.
Gerry and Rhoades, both living with Parkinson’s disease, connect while waiting to see a doctor. Because Gerry has been dealing with the condition longer, he offers advice and support to Rhoades, who is newly diagnosed.
In the final scene, Rhoades and Gerry share an emotional moment while watching Fox’s character experience a hallucination caused by their worsening illness.
Bill Lawrence, a lead producer on the show Shrinking, told People magazine that Michael J. Fox was surprised he hadn’t been involved, despite the series prominently featuring a character with Parkinson’s disease. Fox had stepped back from acting but was reportedly upset he wasn’t asked to participate.
Lawrence remembered Fox jokingly asking, “I love the show! You’re doing one about Parkinson’s, why haven’t you asked me to be on it?” That simple question led the show to create a special appearance just for him.
The only condition was that Michael J. Fox didn’t want to portray a version of himself on the show. He preferred to play a character who, like him, lived with Parkinson’s disease.
The showrunner shared that working with Fox was deeply meaningful. Lawrence also expressed his hope that Fox will return for another season, specifically season 4.
This funny and heartwarming series follows a therapist who throws traditional rules out the window, telling his patients his honest opinions, no matter how inappropriate. His unconventional approach sparks personal growth for his clients and creates surprising complications in his own life.
The show, which debuted in 2023, was created by Brett Goldstein, Lawrence, and Segal. ScreenRant gave it a high score of 9 out of 10, highlighting its ability to deliver truly funny moments and “genuine belly laughs“.
