As a movie and TV buff, I’ve been following this filmmaker for years – I loved his work on shows like Glee, Nip/Tuck, and American Horror Story. But what really grabbed me was when he started tackling real-life stories with American Crime Story and then that intense Netflix series, Monster. Now, it sounds like he’s doing a complete 180, trading in the true crime genre for something completely different – a true romance series! I’m definitely curious to see what he does with that.
Following the success of his previous show based on a comic book, Murphy once again struck gold with Love Story, which quickly became a national favorite. According to FlixPatrol, Love Story recently launched at number two on the U.S. Top 10 Show charts, coming in just behind the current leader.
The movie Love Story had a strong start on digital platforms, ranking fourth on the Apple TV store and tenth in Canada. It also landed in fourth place on Disney+ worldwide, though it didn’t reach the top spot anywhere on that platform. However, it did achieve second place in countries like Romania, Iceland, and Austria.
The first season of Love Story launches a new series of standalone stories, focusing on real-life romances. This season, titled Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, tells the story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, a famously celebrated couple of the 1990s.
This nine-episode series tells the story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, exploring their instant connection, quick romance, and very public marriage. The series is created by Connor Hines and is based on Elizabeth Beller’s biography of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Ryan Murphy is an executive producer.
Sarah Pidgeon stars as Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and Paul Anthony Kelly plays John F. Kennedy Jr. Naomi Watts and Grace Gummer, who have often worked with the show’s creator, are also in the cast.
The show tells the story of a man who captivated America – he was treated like royalty, and the public followed his life from childhood through his years as a popular and charismatic bachelor. His future wife was a successful woman in her own right, known for her independence and unique fashion sense. She worked her way up from a sales assistant to a key executive at Calvin Klein, becoming a close friend and advisor to the designer himself.
The show, Love Story, follows a couple whose relationship is put to the test by the pressures of sudden fame and constant media scrutiny. It depicts their difficult and emotional journey as their private love becomes a public fascination.
Love Story Is Off to a Great Start
Recently, there’s been criticism of content in the television industry, especially after his latest series, the Monster anthology, upset people affected by the crimes of the serial killers it depicted. Now, he’s trying a new type of show, and so far, the response has been good.
Critics generally loved Love Story, giving it an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a ‘Certified Fresh’ designation. While audience scores aren’t available yet, early reviews have been positive.
The initial positive response is a good sign, both for the potential second season of Love Story (which hasn’t been confirmed yet) and for the upcoming series Monster. The creator is preparing to reveal the first details about Monster soon.
Love Story releases new episodes every Thursday until its Mar. 26 finale.
