Wicked is one of the most successful Broadway musicals ever, and it’s hugely popular with audiences. In 2024, Universal Pictures released the first of two movies based on the show, and it performed very well in theaters.
In Hollywood, making money often means creating sequels, and Donna Langley, head of NBCUniversal Entertainment, recently discussed the future of Wicked. The two-part movie adaptation, directed by Jon M. Chu, earned over $1.2 billion globally and concluded the story of Elphaba and Glinda in 2025 with Wicked: For Good. But there are still more stories to be told in the world of Oz.
Ever since the musical Wicked first debuted, people have been wondering how long it will run. Recently, producer Langley Park said it’s too soon to talk about plans beyond the current run.
Despite the challenges, they’re still exploring options to expand the franchise. The executive explained they’re optimistic about finding new ways to build on the story and world, given the strong performance of the first two films.
As a huge movie fan, I always appreciate how carefully studios work with the people who own the rights to characters and stories. They really make sure everything is ready to go with those rights holders – meaning they confirm all the characters and plots they’re using are legally cleared before anything’s released. It’s a collaborative process, and it makes sense they’d want to get everyone on board first.
How Could Wicked Continue?
L. Frank Baum’s classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, became freely available for anyone to use in 1956, 56 years after it was first published. This opened the door for Gregory Maguire to reimagine the story and its characters in his 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked then became a hugely successful Broadway musical, winning a Tony Award, and was later adapted into two films.
The original 1939 movie is still under copyright, which meant the creators of the Wicked adaptations couldn’t copy certain elements. Interestingly, they even avoided showing the character of Dorothy – not because of legal issues, but because of the impact of the classic film itself.
Cynthia Erivo, the lead actress who played Elphaba, expressed her support for keeping the original Dorothy, saying it allows audiences to enjoy the character they’re already familiar with.
Though we don’t see her face, this character appears as a supporting role in the second half of Wicked: For Good. The story doesn’t show her traveling down the Yellow Brick Road with the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow, either.
Although another movie focused on Dorothy’s adventures in Oz seems improbable, filmmakers could explore stories about how the Wizard came to Oz, the character of Madame Morrible, or other figures within the Oz world.
You can now rent or buy Wicked: For Good digitally. It will also be available to stream on Peacock beginning March 20th.
