Frieren Season 2 Episode 5 Review

The return of the highly anticipated anime Frieren hasn’t quite lived up to expectations so far, with the first five episodes moving the story along at a slow pace. While still enjoyable to watch, Frieren, Fern, and Stark haven’t made significant progress in their adventures. The latest episode, “Logistics in the Northern Plateau” (Episode 33 overall), continues this trend, offering another slow-paced installment that doesn’t advance the group’s journey much further.

Episode 5 of Frieren Season 2, adapting manga chapters 69-70, focuses on a couple of seemingly small adventures for the group. However, staying true to the show’s style, even these minor quests deliver important insights. One lesson in particular surprisingly reveals the central theme of the entire story, giving viewers a glimpse of how Frieren, Fern, and Stark’s journey will ultimately conclude, despite it just beginning.

Frieren, Fern and Stark’s Latest “Waste of Time” is a Microcosm of the Whole Series

In Frieren Season 2, Episode 5, Frieren reconnects with an old companion named Fass. This leads Fern and Stark into their most challenging task yet: helping Fass find the legendary liquor called Boshaft. Fass is determined to taste Boshaft, believing it to be the greatest drink ever made, based on information from an old elven tablet.

Once the group finally helps Fass access the ancient vault, they discover something Frieren already knew: the spirit inside turns out to be a terrible, cheap liquor. It’s hilariously bad! Frieren actually met the elf who created the stone tablet leading to it centuries ago, and she did it simply because she was bored. Despite Fass’s disappointment, everyone manages to laugh about it and even enjoy drinking the awful spirit together.

The main takeaway is that it’s perfectly fine to enjoy activities simply for the fun of it, even if they don’t have a clear goal. This idea is central to Frieren’s philosophy. Throughout their travels, Frieren, Fern, and Stark often find that the joy comes from the journey itself, not necessarily reaching a specific destination. Similarly, Fass found purpose in his search for Boshaft, even though the outcome wasn’t what he expected.

Frieren initially hesitated to help Fass because she understood achieving his goal would ultimately leave him without a purpose – a concept central to the entire story. However, even with that understanding, viewers can still thoroughly enjoy the rest of Frieren’s adventures.

Frieren Most Hilarious Sequence to Date Renders the Manga Obsolete in the Best Way Possible

The latter half of Frieren Season 2, Episode 5 is arguably the funniest part of the series so far. This short story arc is consistently funny, focusing on Frieren being made to work off a debt the Hero’s Party ran up while traveling to defeat the Demon King. While the humor worked well in the original manga, the anime adaptation really nails the comedic timing, making it even better.

Putting the humor aside, there’s one moment that’s truly special—almost like magic. When Frieren helps a mining team locate silver, she uses a powerful spell to show them exactly where to dig. While the manga only showed this spell in a quick image, the anime expands on it with a beautiful scene that feels like the studio, MADHOUSE, had some extra resources to create a visually stunning ending to the episode.

The Frieren anime is significantly enhancing the source material, to the point where the already-adapted manga chapters feel somewhat unnecessary. The anime adds a lot of rich detail and world-building that isn’t present in the manga, making the story feel truly brought to life. It’s the adaptation many manga fans dream of for their favorite series.

Frieren Season 2, Episode 5 Subtly Hints at the Series’ Biggest Plot Twist

I’m really enjoying Season 2 of Frieren, and Episode 5, while continuing the season’s slower pace, is actually a strength! What I love is how the show tells these charming, little stories – often self-contained – but always with a meaningful lesson. The way they’re adapting the manga, splitting each episode into two parts, is working brilliantly. They’re not rushing anything, taking the time to really explore each chapter and even adding details that make the world feel so much more real and lived-in. It’s a fantastic approach.

Episode 5 of Frieren Season 2, focusing on Fass’ story, suggests a core theme of the series is being revealed sooner than expected. Fass wasn’t truly searching for the drink Boshaft, but for the journey itself – and the same may be true for Frieren’s quest to reach Aureole. It’s quite possible the group won’t find anything significant at Aureole, but the trip there is what truly matters, which fits with what we know about Frieren’s perspective.

To mark the release of Episode 5 in Season 2, a new promotional image was revealed, along with news about the upcoming ‘Divine Revolte’ story arc. This arc will begin with Episode 7 on February 27th, kicking off the season’s first continuous storyline lasting more than a short segment. While the recent, more relaxed episodes have been enjoyable, it will be great to see Fern, Froeren, and Stark facing a serious challenge again.
