Classic 5-Part Space Opera Series Now Officially Free To Stream With Intriguing New Release Strategy

A classic space opera series will soon be free to watch, albeit with a bit of a twist.

Fans of science fiction and genre TV are off to a great start in the new year! Classic shows are becoming more accessible, letting viewers revisit old favorites or catch up on what they may have missed. For example, all episodes of The X-Files are now available on Pluto TV, and Babylon 5, another popular show from the 90s, is also being released in a way that feels nostalgic.

I’m so excited! Warner Bros. Discovery is putting episodes of Babylon 5 on YouTube for free! It’s a great way to re-live this classic show, or for new fans to discover it. They’re releasing one episode a week, and so far the pilot, “Midnight on the Firing Line,” and “Soul Hunter” are up. You can find them easily – just search for Babylon 5 and the episode number on YouTube!

As a big fan, I was thrilled to see this space opera land on YouTube after it disappeared from Tubi. But what really got me excited is how they’re releasing it – a little bit each week! It reminds me of how the original Babylon 5 used to air, and I think that’s brilliant. It feels like they’re giving us, especially those of us who grew up with the show, a chance to enjoy it like we did back then – a weekly event instead of just binging it all at once.

The original Babylon 5 series, which aired from February 1993 to November 1997 and lasted five seasons, featured a talented cast including Bruce Boxleitner, Michael O’Hare, Claudia Christian, Jerry Doyle, Mira Furlan, Richard Biggs, Andrea Thompson, Bill Mumy, Jason Carter, Tracy Scoggins, Stephen Furst, Patricia Tallman, Peter Jurasik, Andreas Katsulas, Jeff Conaway, and Robert Rusle.

Created by J. Michael Straczynski, Babylon 5 followed the lives of human soldiers and alien ambassadors stationed on the space station of the same name. The show explored their shifting relationships – sometimes marked by conflict, other times by cooperation – within a complex and evolving storyline. It became a beloved series of the 1990s, earning two Emmy Awards and attracting notable guest stars like Bryan Cranston.
