I was really saddened to hear about the passing of the actor on February 11th, at just 48 years old. It’s amazing to see so many people rediscovering his work right now – I’ve noticed his show, Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23, is actually number one in rentals and purchases right now. It’s a lovely way to remember him.
The TV show Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 is currently the most rented show on the Apple TV Store, holding the top spot for the last two days, according to FlixPatrol. It’s also quickly climbing the rental charts on Amazon Prime, and is only behind Landman in popularity.
The movie *Don’t Trust the B features Krysten Ritter as Chloe, a carefree woman who scams potential roommates by taking rent money and then intentionally driving them away with her wild behavior. However, her plan is disrupted when her newest roommate, June (played by Dreama Walker), refuses to leave, and the two unexpectedly become friends.
Liza Lapira, Michael Blaiklock, Eric André, Ray Ford, and Van Der Beek are also starring in the show. Van Der Beek plays a character based on himself – a friend of Chloe’s.
The show *Don’t Trust the B had a decent start with viewers in its first season, but ratings dropped in Season 2. As a result, ABC canceled the show, leaving eight episodes unseen on television. These episodes were later made available online through iTunes, Hulu, and ABC’s website.
Although the show didn’t achieve high ratings overall, critics generally liked it. The first season received an 88% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the second season followed closely with 83%. While many know actor Van Der Beek from Dawson’s Creek, a lot of his fans actually think *Don’t Trust the B is his best work, because he was willing to playfully make fun of himself and his past roles.
Nahnatchka Khan created the show Don’t Trust the B. After it ended, she went on to create the popular ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat, which ran from 2015 to 2020. She also developed Young Rock, a sitcom loosely based on Dwayne Johnson’s life, and the romantic comedy series Laid*, though it didn’t last long.
James Van Der Beek Was Diagnosed With Cancer in 2023
In November 2024, actor James Van Der Beek shared that he received a colorectal cancer diagnosis in August 2023. To help pay for his treatment, he started selling items from his popular shows, Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues, last year.
Following his passing, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support his wife, Kimberly, and their six children. The funds will help with everyday costs, bills, and the children’s schooling. As of today, the campaign has raised over $2.2 million.
You can rent the movie Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23 on streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
