Starship Troopers Is Already a Better Movie Than Helldivers

When Helldivers II launched in 2024, it quickly became incredibly popular. Bringing the game to consoles like Xbox only added to its success. So, it’s not surprising that a Helldivers movie is being planned. While many fans will be thrilled, some are wondering if a movie is necessary, considering the existing Starship Troopers film.

Released in 1997, Starship Troopers presented a future society deeply focused on the military and patriotism. The film follows soldiers training to fight the Arachnids, or ‘Bugs,’ and depicts their willingness to sacrifice their lives for the greater good – defending Earth and their loved ones. Helldivers II explores similar ideas, leading to frequent comparisons between the two works.

What is the Helldivers Franchise About?

Helldivers depicts a world where Super Earth is governed by a seemingly democratic, yet totalitarian regime. The leaders manipulate the system to ensure they always win, and the citizens wholeheartedly support them, pledging their lives to the ruling powers without hesitation.

Helldivers are elite soldiers celebrated by their government and widely seen as symbols of freedom and the best example of managed democracy. It’s remarkable how this messaging impacts players, with many online videos showing them enthusiastically supporting Super Earth and promoting managed democracy while fighting enemies.

Helldivers has four enemy factions. The Terminids are insect-like creatures that attack in large swarms, and the Automatons are a never-ending robotic force. The Illuminates are alien beings with zombie-like characteristics. Recently, a fourth faction called the Cyborgs was added, providing players with yet another dangerous enemy to fight against as they spread democracy.

Helldivers sends players into extremely dangerous situations with a simple goal: complete the mission, or fail trying. The game celebrates sacrificing yourself for Super Earth as the ultimate act of heroism, constantly reinforcing the idea that there’s always another life to give for the cause. The world of Helldivers is intentionally satirical and embraces over-the-top action.

Why Starship Troopers Makes Helldivers Harder to Adapt

Those who enjoy Starship Troopers will likely notice parallels with the world of Helldivers. Both feature societies heavily controlled by the military, where certain privileges are linked to service. The governments in both universes engage in questionable activities, and while they honor soldiers, they also treat their lives as expendable.

The two series share a striking visual consistency, from the look of their weapons and armor to even the creatures that appear in them. This extends to the characters as well, who all behave in a way that feels natural to the world, often making sacrifices to fulfill their roles.

It’s interesting to note the similarities between these two stories, but they also present a challenge. The upcoming series Helldivers, starring Jason Momoa, will have its own unique plot, however, it’s hard to ignore the strong resemblance to Starship Troopers. The worlds and narratives are simply too alike to view them as completely separate.

I keep finding myself revisiting Starship Troopers – it’s a film that really sticks with you, even after all these years. It’s spawned a whole franchise with multiple sequels, though honestly, none of them have quite captured the magic of the original for me or most fans, it seems.

The strong existing love for these types of movies creates a challenge for Helldivers to gain traction. It’s tough to convince fans to embrace a new film when a popular version already exists. We’ve seen this often with remakes – they rarely live up to the originals, even with some differences.

Helldivers Needs to Distinguish Itself From Starship Troopers

The key to success for Helldivers is creating a truly unique identity. To stand out, it shouldn’t immediately focus on the Terminids, as that would draw comparisons to the Archanids. Instead, featuring the Illuminates or Automatons would be much more original and visually interesting.

Helldivers stands out thanks to its powerful stratagems, like calling in orbital lasers or devastating Hell Bombs. These are what truly make the game unique. Though the setting and some graphics might feel familiar, the stratagems offer a fresh experience.

As a huge sci-fi fan, I’m excited to hear Helldivers is getting a movie! The game has really taken off, but it’s tough to say if that success will carry over to the big screen. There are a lot of similar space combat films out there, and Helldivers really needs to bring something unique to the table. Otherwise, I worry audiences will just end up wishing they were re-watching Starship Troopers instead. Let’s hope it delivers!
