Valentine’s Day isn’t always about grand, traditional romance. Sometimes, it’s about a wisecracking, unconventional hero like Deadpool – a character known for his red suit (and a bit of dark humor!). Ten years ago, Ryan Reynolds brought Deadpool to the big screen with the first Deadpool movie, released just before Valentine’s Day. The film was a game-changer for comic book adaptations, helping to make way for more edgy and unconventional superhero stories like The Boys. Plus, it introduced audiences to memorable supporting characters like Dopinder, Blind Al, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
The second Deadpool movie came out in 2018, and the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine will officially bring the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This next film is also making history as the first R-rated movie in the MCU! All three Deadpool films are good, but the original Deadpool remains the strongest – it’s still the best of the bunch and a great choice for a Valentine’s Day movie, even after ten years.
Starring God’s Perfect Idiot … It’s Deadpool

Twentieth Century Fox
Wade Wilson, known as Deadpool, first appeared in comics in 1990. Fans of the comics had a general idea of what to expect from the 2016 movie, but nothing could have fully prepared them for the opening sequence. It featured exaggerated slow-motion shots and prominently showcased Ryan Reynolds, who was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2010. Paired with Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning,” these opening credits were unforgettable and signaled the start of a completely over-the-top and energetic film.
Okay, so everyone’s been talking about how Deadpool shakes things up, and honestly, I see the comparison to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Guardians definitely changed the vibe of the Marvel universe, and Deadpool does something similar. But where Guardians leaned into classic rock, Deadpool‘s soundtrack is a wild, fun mix of rap, pop, and hip-hop. It’s surprisingly brilliant – seriously, hearing a sweet pop song while Deadpool, well, kebabs someone (and yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like!) is just wonderfully chaotic and makes the movie even better.
Deadpool stands out from other superhero movies because the main character, Wade, narrates the story himself. He frequently talks directly to the audience, breaking the fourth wall – sometimes even multiple times at once – and manipulates how the story unfolds with a non-traditional, jumping-around timeline. He even controls things like the music, camera angles, and even rewinds scenes! This playful approach makes the movie incredibly fun to watch.
I’ve always been fascinated by Wade Wilson, or Deadpool. He’s not your classic hero; he’s so much more complicated, walking the line between good and bad. It’s like he has an angel and a devil on his shoulders – Colossus pushing him to be better, and Ajax bringing out his worst impulses. What I love most is how Deadpool really makes you think about what it means to be a hero. It shows that heroism doesn’t always look the same, and that not every hero has a predictable backstory. He’s proof that you can be a hero even if you don’t fit the mold, and sometimes, you don’t even need a label.
The film definitely has a playful, self-aware tone. It’s full of pop culture jokes, referencing everything from classic movies to current trends. There’s even a memorable cameo from Stan Lee, and Deadpool constantly playfully mocks Marvel. A scene where Colossus scolds Deadpool for his swearing feels like a direct nod to a similar moment in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film also includes a funny bit where Deadpool jokes about which version of Professor X he’s meeting, acknowledging the complicated timelines – you can never have enough Professor Xs! And the end-credits scene is a clear tribute to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, complete with another fun Marvel connection to Samuel L. Jackson.
Deadpool is extremely violent and graphic. The movie adds a unique comedic element to superhero action with Deadpool’s running commentary as he fights. One particularly shocking scene – Wade cutting off his own arm to get away from Colossus – is both disturbing and funny.
Boom-Boxing ‘Careless Whisper’ in the Next Life

Twentieth Century Fox
Ryan Reynolds is perfect for the role. He uniquely captures Wade’s sarcastic wit and habit of using humor to deflect, making it difficult to imagine anyone else in the part. It’s almost as if Reynolds isn’t even acting – and that’s high praise. He shares fantastic chemistry with Morena Baccarin, who plays Vanessa; she perfectly complements Wade’s energetic personality. Their connection feels real on screen, though the film quickly shifts away from overly romantic or serious moments, staying true to its comedic nature. Even the intimate scenes between them are lighthearted, playfully unfolding across different holidays.

While some might see a complicated connection stemming from hardship in Wade and Vanessa’s relationship, it’s actually a deep soulmate connection. Despite Deadpool’s constant joking and self-deprecating humor, his love for Vanessa is genuine and heartfelt. It’s the only time we see him truly vulnerable, and their connection is the ultimate romantic expression.
I absolutely promise that if we meet again in another life, I will serenade you with George Michael’s ‘Careless Whisper’ played loudly outside your window. It’ll be quite the surprise!
Wade perfectly recreates a sweet moment by playing the song for Vanessa on his phone – a callback to an earlier scene where he wore a Hugh Jackman mask (a clever hint at what happens in the third movie!). Ultimately, Deadpool’s story is about love, action, and a serious love for chimichangas.
