Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Makes Big Change From Last 2 Movies

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is making a big change from the first two Spider-Verse movies.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the next animated superhero film in the Spider-Verse series, directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson. It continues the stories from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and is currently scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures in 2027.

What is the update on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse?

Sony Pictures Animation hasn’t shared many details about their third Spider-Man movie yet, but a recent announcement indicates it will be quite different from the previous two films.

In a first for the series, Sony’s Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville told The Hollywood Reporter they’ve hired a live-action director of photography, Alice Brooks, to create a new visual style.

When asked about the challenging work conditions on ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ compared to ‘Across the Spider-Verse’, Belson explained that animators always have a choice about which projects they work on. He acknowledged that demanding ‘crunch times’ are common in the animation industry, even on popular and ambitious projects like the Spider-Verse films, but emphasized that people are drawn to work on those exciting opportunities.

De Froberville explained that they adjusted the production process to reduce late-stage revisions, acknowledging that Chris and Phil always refine things near the end. They brought in Alice Brooks, a live-action cinematographer, who approached camera work differently than on Spider-Verse previously. Now that animation is underway, the directors and Chris and Phil have more opportunity to experiment and visualize sequences early in the story phase. This thorough upfront work means fewer changes are needed later in the pipeline at Imageworks.

The next Spider-Man animated movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is scheduled to come out in the US on June 18, 2027.
