The live-action version of the popular anime Mobile Suit Gundam has added Sydney Sweeney (known for The Housemaid) to its cast. This upcoming sci-fi action movie aims to bring the classic story to life with epic battles and giant robots, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most impressive anime-to-live-action adaptations in years.
According to Deadline, Jason Clarke, known for his work in The Last Frontier, is the latest actor to join the cast of the upcoming Gundam movie. He’ll be acting alongside Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, who previously starred in Street Fighter. Details about the characters Clarke, Sweeney, and Centineo will play haven’t been revealed yet. Netflix will distribute the film, which is a production of Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks. While there’s no confirmed release date, filming is scheduled to start this year, potentially leading to a release in 2027 or 2028.
The upcoming series Gundam will be written and directed by Jim Mickle, who also created Sweet Tooth. It’s based on the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, which began with a popular anime in 1979. The show takes place in a futuristic world where young pilots battle each other using enormous robots called mechs. The conflict centers around a war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation, with space colonies scattered throughout the galaxy – Zeon being the most distant from Earth. A common theme in Gundam is the use of teenage soldiers on both sides of the conflict.
