Just as Batman’s current Robin is stepping down, a previous Robin is set to reappear in the comics. The “Boy Wonder” is a classic superhero partner, and every Batman enthusiast has a preferred version. However, Stephanie Brown is a Robin who doesn’t always get the recognition she deserves.
Okay, so most people know me as Spoiler, but I actually was Robin for a while! My on-again, off-again boyfriend, Tim Drake, was rocking the Robin suit in the recent Batman comics by Matt Fraction and Jorge Jimenez, but he just gave it up. Apparently, Fraction says we’re gonna see how I, Stephanie Brown, react to all that in the upcoming issues.
Comic book writer Matt Fraction recently discussed the future of the Bat-Family on the Comic Book Club podcast. He hinted that Stephanie Brown will learn about Tim Drake’s departure as Robin in issue #9 of the current comic series.
I was still figuring out Stephanie’s story, and when I had an idea about where things should go, I shared it with Michael Conrad and Becky Cloonan to get their feedback, he explained.
Everyone agreed it made perfect sense, so Stephanie is going to discover what happened during the Drake Break in Batman. I can’t wait to see how she reacts!
Stephanie Brown Was an Underrated Robin for Batman
Stephanie Brown first became Robin in 2004, but Batman unexpectedly let her go. Despite this, fans still hope she’ll return as his sidekick. She’s primarily operated as the hero Spoiler while working with Batman, and she’s also served as Batgirl.
She’s only the second woman to take on this role, following Carrie Kelley from The Dark Knight Returns. Stephanie Brown was recently written by Michael Conrad and Becky Cloonan in their Batgirls series. Now that Batgirl is being rebooted, Stephanie is available to see how Tim is doing.
Okay, so DC has a lot of different Robins floating around, and it’s tough for them to give everyone something cool to do. Now that Tim Drake’s moved on, it feels like the perfect time for Stephanie Brown to really shine. Dick Grayson’s already super busy leading the Titans, and Damian Wayne’s teaming up with his dad in the Batman and Robin book, so it makes sense that Stephanie gets a chance now.
For a while, the Batman comic was the only place to follow Tim Drake’s adventures as Robin, but now that role is empty. Will Batman correct his past mistake of letting Stephanie Brown go and finally accept her as his new Robin? Or will the comic focus on Batman working alongside a Batgirl instead?
Matt Fraction’s Batman can be found wherever comics are sold.
