Alien: Romulus Becomes a Hit on Prime Video 2 Years Later

Topping the charts still, this year’s standout sci-fi hit has proven to be a huge success with audiences and has remained popular on streaming platforms since its release.

The science fiction movie Alien: Romulus made a comeback on February 11th, appearing on Prime Video‘s top 10 list at number nine, slightly ahead of the comedy Down Periscope. It also performed well internationally, reaching number three in Spain on HBO Max – its highest ranking there.

For a long time, a movie’s success was judged by how well it did in theaters. While box office numbers still matter, how long a film stays popular on streaming services is becoming just as important. This particular sci-fi movie has done well both in cinemas and on streaming platforms.

Alien: Romulus is the seventh film in the Alien series, which began with Ridley Scott’s original. While the franchise has generally done well in theaters, reviews have been mixed over time. However, the newest installment has been a hit with both critics and moviegoers.

I caught the film when it hit theaters on August 16th, and it’s definitely a hit with both critics and audiences! It earned a solid 80% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from reviewers, and viewers actually seemed to like it even more, giving it an 85% approval score. The CinemaScore came in at a B+, which is fantastic – it’s the best score any film has received since Aliens back in 1986. Interestingly, the original film never even had a CinemaScore, so this new one is making a real splash.

The film Alien: Romulus was a financial success for Disney, earning $350.7 million worldwide on an $80 million budget. It also became very popular on streaming services, and continues to be watched more than a year after its initial release. It first became available on Hulu in the US on November 21st, gaining significant attention, and then launched on Disney+ globally on January 15, 2025.

Since its release, Alien: Romulus has consistently performed well, recently becoming a success in theaters. Now, it’s available to stream on Prime Video.

Alien: Romulus Will Receive a Sequel

As a huge sci-fi fan, I was thrilled to see the film doing so well on streaming – it really proves people still love this universe! And it looks like we’re in luck because Alien: Romulus is already getting a follow-up movie. Though, get this – it seems things are going to be quite different this time around.

Fede Álvarez directed the 2024 science fiction movie and co-wrote its screenplay with Rodo Sayagues. He’s also writing the script for the next installment, but…

The director explained why he wasn’t planning to continue with a sequel to Romulus. He said the original plan was always to make just one film, similar to how directors like James Cameron and David Fincher often do – one film and move on. He also acknowledged that Ridley Scott, who created the original, has the freedom to make as many films in the series as he wants.

Alien: Romulus is streaming on Prime Video.
