Prime Video’s 12-Part Sci-Fi Series Is Perfect For A One-Sit Binge

Science fiction anthologies are becoming more and more popular, and “Secret Level” on Prime Video is a hidden gem within the genre. The show consists of 15 self-contained episodes, each telling a unique story. While anthology series can sometimes be difficult to follow because of their changing narratives, “Secret Level” consistently keeps you engaged and is truly one of the best, with every episode hitting the mark.

Secret Level quickly gained popularity by referencing popular video games, immediately attracting fans of those games. Beyond that, the show boasts high-quality production, impressive animation, and a fantastic voice cast featuring major stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Keanu Reeves, and Emily Swallow.

What Is Secret Level About?

Each installment of Secret Level presents a complete story taking place within a different video game universe, like those of Warhammer, Dungeons & Dragons, and Pac-Man. The show has similarities to Netflix’s acclaimed sci-fi anthology series, Love, Death + Robots – sharing writers and creative staff – but the two shows aren’t related in terms of plot or characters.

Compared to Love, Death + Robots, Secret Level is generally less unsettling. Many of its episodes have optimistic endings and focus more on fantasy than science fiction. A particularly memorable episode is “New World: The Once And Future King,” featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a boastful king whose failed conquest leads to a story about redemption and getting another chance.

You Can Binge Secret Level In Less Than 4 Hours

Each episode of Secret Level is very brief, typically lasting from 10 to 18 minutes. Because of this short length, you can easily watch the whole series over a few days, or finish it all in under four hours. Good, short fantasy TV shows are hard to find, but Secret Level is a standout.

I’ve seen a lot of great science fiction, but I really love what short anthology series bring to the table – that incredible burst of creativity. And Secret Level is just brilliant! The idea of taking inspiration from games we already know and love, but crafting completely original stories around them, is so clever. What’s even better is how rewarding it is to rewatch – it’s like revisiting old friends, both the games and the episodes themselves!

Which Games Should Be In Secret Level Season 2

Great news! Secret Level is coming back for a second season, it was announced in 2024. While we don’t know which video games the show will cover next, some are more likely than others. Shows with popular characters and a unique style tend to do well, but the creators might steer clear of games that have already been adapted into other shows, like Fallout.

As a critic, I’m cautiously optimistic about what Valorant could become, but it really needs to stand on its own and not just be seen as riding the wave of Arcane’s success. And honestly, the little tease of Ghost of Tsushima in Secret Level’s first season has me hoping for more. But the real question is: after turning Pac-Man into a genuinely terrifying experience, what wonderfully twisted take will Secret Level bring to a classic like Tetris? That’s what I’m really excited to find out.
