Be warned: this article reveals details from Season 2 of Cross. The killer from Season 1 was truly disturbing. Even though Ryan Eggold is a talented actor, the character of Ed Ramsey was unsettling to watch. Ramsey appeared to be a successful and likable businessman, but he secretly had a morbid obsession with serial killers and death. He committed horrific acts, kidnapping, torturing, and disfiguring victims to make them resemble his favorite killers before ultimately murdering them.
His work during the day would probably make him a target for the killer in Season 2 of Cross. I really like how this season changes things up, turning people like Ed into the victims of a pair of vigilantes. They’re targeting wealthy, powerful people like Ed who are unkind to others, and their actions are fueled by a personal connection to Rebecca (Jeanine Mason). They’re determined to get revenge, they have a well-thought-out plan, and honestly, after watching Season 2 of Cross, I’m not even sure I want Alex (Aldis Hodge) to stop them.
‘Cross’ Season 2 Introduces Terrifying Serial Killer Duo Donnie and Rebecca

Amazon Prime Video
The first two episodes of Cross Season 2 introduce us to two dangerous antagonists, Donnie and Rebecca. Right away, it’s clear Rebecca is driven by a desire for revenge for her mother’s death. She doesn’t simply kill her victims; she explains her reasons and even performs a chilling ritual, cutting off three fingers from each of them as punishment for their actions.
Donnie is as brutal as Rebecca, willing to go to any length to eliminate those he deems evil. Like her, he also wants to help victims, shown by their rescue of women exploited by powerful men. What makes Donnie especially interesting is that his reasons for fighting aren’t entirely clear. It’s unclear whether he’s driven by loyalty to Rebecca, or if he has his own personal vendetta. Hopefully, the show will reveal more about his past as the season goes on.
This new pair of killers is very different from the first season of Cross, where the murderer was someone Rebecca and Donnie would have understood wanting to kill. Although their victims suffer just as much, these killers aren’t targeting random, innocent people. They have a specific reason and plan behind each murder.
Even Lance Durand, the latest person seemingly targeted, initially appeared to be a well-meaning entrepreneur trying to solve world hunger. However, given what we know about the killers, it was clear he was hiding something. As the story unfolds, those secrets begin to come to light.
It’s hard not to find yourself strangely drawn to the killers’ side, even though fan favorites Alex and Kayla have been called in to save Lance. Unlike the first season, where the villain Ed was truly repulsive and Alex was the clear hero, this season adds a complex twist. While murder is never justified, Alex—one of Prime Video’s strongest action leads—might actually start to understand where the killer is coming from. He’s a man of strong principles who always wants to protect the innocent, but what happens when the person he’s hunting is targeting people who deserve it? It raises a really compelling moral dilemma.
‘Cross’ Season 2 Killers Follow Purpose, Not Compulsion

Amazon Prime Video
When Lance tells Alex and Kayla about Rebecca’s victim in Season 2, Episode 1 of Cross, it sparks a realization: Rebecca isn’t simply a murderer. She embodies a larger group of people driven to fight against a deeply flawed system. This is highlighted by Esteban, who has created a shrine to her beneath a subway. Calling her the “goddess of light” implies he’s either working directly with her or completely devoted to her cause. Like Rebecca, Esteban believes he’s fighting for a just reason – exposing Lance’s company for using illegal child labor.
Donnie and Rebecca’s trip to Mexico sheds more light on their strange and unsettling method of killing. Rebecca takes a finger from each victim, a symbolic act connected to the loss of children’s fingers in their past. Both Rebecca, Donnie, and Esteban believe they are acting on behalf of a greater power, correcting injustices that others ignore.
Unlike Ed, Rebecca isn’t killing impulsively or out of a compulsion. She carefully plans and executes her actions, targeting only those who have hurt others – similar to the character Dexter Morgan. The fact that Lance has been receiving threats for a year and a half suggests Rebecca has been operating with a long-term plan and meticulous preparation.
Working together with Donnie, they form a frighteningly precise and methodical team. They carefully plan each kill, as if following a detailed strategy, and seem determined to reach their ultimate goal.
‘Cross’ Season 2 Presents a Sympathetic Female Serial Killer

Amazon Prime Video
Rebecca is a truly terrifying recent addition to the world of television serial killers. She’s a compelling and unsettling character, blending the charm and complex morality of Dexter Morgan with the cold, calculating ruthlessness of Hannibal Lecter. Like Dexter, she’s surprisingly easy to empathize with, even as she commits terrible acts. She joins a growing list of captivating female killers on TV, alongside characters like Villanelle from Killing Eve and Alice from Luther.

Despite being a fascinating character, Rebecca reinforces the common idea of the ‘female serial killer’ – a trope highlighted by Mia LaPierre in Dexter: Resurrection. The media often assumes female killers have righteous motivations, as seen with Mia’s nickname, ‘Lady Vengeance,’ which wrongly implied she was motivated by revenge. Rebecca fits this predictable mold, but that doesn’t diminish her appeal.
It might seem extreme if Rebecca was simply seeking revenge for her mother’s death. However, Lance is likely exploiting child labor and engaging in other dishonest activities, and no one seems to be stopping him – either people are afraid to speak up, Lance is intimidating them, or he’s using his wealth and influence to avoid consequences. Feeling abandoned by the system, Rebecca believes she has no option but to take action herself, much like Dexter does when the law fails.
You know, it’s strange, but I actually find myself almost feeling for this villain. It’s odd to say, but there’s something about her story that gets under your skin. However, and this is a big however, that doesn’t excuse anything she does. Even if the people she hurts are terrible, or have messed up badly, or even deserve some of what’s coming to them, her actions are still completely wrong. There’s no justifying them, period.
Interestingly, because the killings are happening outside the law, it gives the show a chance to really explore what makes Alex Cross tick. It will be fascinating to see his reaction when he discovers who Rebecca is, what she and Donnie are up to, and their motivations. While Alex may only support killing in true self-defense, he also strongly opposes things like unethical business practices and exploiting children. This case is shaping up to be his most difficult yet, forcing him to track down a complex female killer who genuinely believes her actions are justified and serve a greater purpose. We’re hooked and eager to see how this captivating story unfolds in the Amazon Prime Video adaptation.
