The 2017 superhero film Power Rangers, starring Dacre Montgomery from Stranger Things, will be removed from Netflix next month. This movie offered a fresh take on the classic Power Rangers story, marking its return to the big screen after 20 years.
Power Rangers (2017) is leaving Netflix next month
Fans of Power Rangers have until March 6, 2026, to watch it on Netflix before it’s removed (according to What’s on Netflix). The movie was a fresh take on the classic series, borrowing elements from the very first episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which originally aired on August 28, 1993.
The story centers around a group of students from Angel Grove who stumble upon ancient alien technology hidden in an old mine. When each student takes a Power Coin, they gain incredible superpowers. They quickly discover they have just under two weeks to stop the evil Rita Repulsa from destroying Earth.
The Power Rangers movie stars Dacre Montgomery as Jason, Naomi Scott as Kimberly, RJ Cyler as Billy, Ludi Lin as Zack, Becky G as Trini, and Elizabeth Banks as the villain Rita Repulsa. Bryan Cranston, Bill Hader, and David Denman also appear in significant roles.
The movie came out on March 24, 2017, and received generally mixed reactions from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a score of 51% based on critics’ reviews and a 65% audience score. Worldwide, the film earned over $142 million in theaters.
The series is most famous for its many different TV shows, but it also includes two movies from the 1990s, plus comic books and video games. The basic idea for the show originally came from the Japanese series Super Sentai.
Before the film came out in 2017, producer Haim Saban mentioned plans for a six-movie series. Even though the movie didn’t do well in theaters, the studio was supposedly developing a follow-up.
In 2018, Hasbro bought the Power Rangers franchise, along with some other properties, for around $522 million in a combination of cash and stock. While Hasbro said they were planning a new movie in 2019, it hasn’t been made yet.
