Why The DCU’s Batman Movie Should Rethink Robins After James Gunn Comments

While the DC Universe’s first Batman film, The Brave and the Bold, is still quite a ways off, recent statements from James Gunn suggest they might change who plays Robin. Originally, the movie was planned to feature Damian Wayne as Batman’s sidekick, but there’s still time to make a different choice.

Batman has a large group of allies known as the Bat-Family. This group includes all the characters who have taken on the role of Robin, with his most recent Robin being his biological son, Damian Wayne.

It’s possible that starting the DC Universe’s Batman story with Damian as Robin could mean missing out on some great storytelling opportunities, and DC Studios seems to be aware of this, based on recent comments from James Gunn.

Things Are Still “In Flux” For The DCU’s Brave and the Bold Batman Movie

Towards the end of 2025, James Gunn shared some interesting news about Brave and the Bold, suggesting that the Batman we see in the new DC Universe might be different in age, and that he may already have a son, Damian, with him when he first appears.

James Gunn says details about a character’s origins and family are still evolving. He advises fans to wait and see how the story unfolds, as things aren’t set in stone yet.

After James Gunn’s recent comments to IGN about Batman’s family, many fans are now questioning whether Damian Wayne will actually be Robin in the upcoming film, The Brave and the Bold, even though it was previously stated he would be.

Considering all of this, changing actors for the role of Robin could actually be a good move. Since the movie isn’t planned until at least 2028, and will come after Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, there’s ample time to consider a different actor for the Boy Wonder, which could offer several advantages.

The DCU’s First Batman Movie Should Start With A Different Robin (Not Damian)

While the 2025 Superman film introduces a DC Universe that feels well-developed, starting Batman’s story with his son, Damian, already present might be pushing things too quickly. This approach could mean missing out on some compelling storylines from the original comics.

Beginning the story with Jason Todd or Tim Drake as Robin would allow for classic storylines like Jason’s death in Death in the Family, or a stronger focus on detective work with Bruce and Tim partnering as a Dynamic Duo.

Considering all of that, it would be great to see Dick Grayson, the original Boy Wonder, first appear as Nightwing. His adventures as Nightwing are very popular in the comics, so it makes a lot of sense.

Holding off on introducing Damian as Robin would create opportunities for more engaging stories about his journey to becoming the character, instead of just showing his past through memories and mentions. This would allow for a more gradual and compelling build-up to his official debut in the DC Universe.

The Brave And The Bold is expected to release in 2028 from DC Studios.
