Though the first Mummy film came out in 1932 with Boris Karloff, most people remember the action-packed series that started in 1999 with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Directed by Stephen Sommers, that Mummy movie was a huge success and helped revive classic Universal Monsters for a new audience. The series included three main films and a spin-off series focused on The Scorpion King, and it remains popular with many who grew up watching it. Its impact can still be seen in adventure films like Pirates of the Caribbean and Disney’s Jungle Cruise.
For years, fans have hoped Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz would return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. Now, Universal Pictures has officially announced a new Mummy movie! This fourth film in the series, which we’ll refer to as The Mummy 4, is scheduled for release in the summer and will be directed by the team behind the successful revival of a 90s horror franchise. Best of all, Fraser and Weisz are confirmed to reprise their roles. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming movie.
Confirmation of ‘The Mummy 4’

Universal Pictures
Talk of a fourth Mummy movie began as early as 2008, even before the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, came out. But after that movie didn’t perform well with audiences and the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plans for The Mummy 4 were scrapped in 2012. Instead, the studio decided to reboot the franchise, which eventually led to the 2017 film starring Tom Cruise. When that reboot also failed to succeed, people started wondering if The Mummy 4 might happen again, especially after Brendan Fraser won an Academy Award in 2022 for his role in The Whale.
A fourth Mummy movie is officially happening, confirmed on November 4, 2025. The directors of the recent Scream films (Scream and Scream VI), as well as Ready or Not and Abigail, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, are set to direct. David Coggeshall, known for his work on Orphan: First Kill and the upcoming Matchbox, will write the screenplay. This new Mummy film will be a direct sequel to the 1999 remake.

The fourth installment of The Mummy is scheduled for release in theaters on May 19, 2028. This new film will debut 96 years after the very first The Mummy starring Boris Karloff, 29 years after the Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz version, and 20 years following The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. It also comes 11 years after Universal Pictures tried to reboot the franchise with Tom Cruise, an attempt that didn’t succeed as part of their Dark Universe plans.

‘The Mummy 4’ Cast

Universal Pictures
Okay, so this is huge news for fans of the original Mummy movies! I’m so excited to hear that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially coming back as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell for The Mummy 4. They were amazing together in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, and while Fraser did one more – The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor – Rachel wasn’t in that one, Maria Bello played Evelyn instead. Right now, they’re the only two actors confirmed to be returning, but honestly, that’s enough to get me hyped!
Oded Fehr, known for playing Ardeth Bay in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, has said he’d be interested in appearing in a fourth Mummy film. John Hannah, who played Jonathan Carnahan in the original trilogy, has also expressed his willingness to return. It’s currently unknown how Alex O’Connell, the son of Rick and Evelyn (played by Freddie Boath and later Luke Ford), will be included in The Mummy 4. It’s uncertain whether Ford or Boath will reprise the role, if the character will be played by a new actor, or if he’ll be left out of the story altogether. There’s also no news about whether Arnold Vosloo will return as the villain Imhotep, as he didn’t appear in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Plot Details of ‘The Mummy 4’

Universal Pictures
Okay, so here’s what I’ve gathered about The Mummy 4. We don’t know much about the story yet, but the good news is Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are coming back as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell! Director Tyler Gillett recently told Empire Magazine that they’re keeping things pretty close to the vest for now, but…
We were hesitant to jump into another franchise after working on Scream, but this script by David Coggeshall really stood out. It’s beautifully written, has a grand scope, and is genuinely scary and enjoyable.
I’m already getting excited for The Mummy 4, even though it’s not due out until summer 2028! I’m expecting we’ll start hearing more about the story and who’s going to be in it sometime in late 2026 or early 2027 – that’s probably when they’ll begin filming, though nothing’s official yet.
