Law & Order: SVU Fan-Favorite Character Officially Returns After Series Exit

A popular character from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is coming back to the show after previously leaving.

I’m a huge fan of the Law & Order franchise, and I was so excited when they brought back a show focused on the Special Victims Unit! It originally starred Christopher Meloni as Elliot Stabler, but after he left, Mariska Hargitay as Captain Olivia Benson really stepped up as the heart of the team. Ice-T is fantastic as Sergeant Fin Tutuola, and together with Kelli Giddish, Peter Scanavino, and Kevin Kane, they make up this incredible group of detectives who tackle really tough cases – things like sexual assault, child abuse, and domestic violence. They’re a truly dedicated team.

According to Deadline, Octavio Pisano will be back as Detective Joe Velasco in season 27 of Law & Order: SVU. He’s currently filming in New York, and insiders say his character will be working undercover. More information about his return and the storylines will be revealed soon.

Dominic Pisano left the Law & Order spinoff as a main cast member in October 2025 when his character transferred to an undercover DEA assignment in San Diego to investigate drug trafficking. This departure allowed him to return for occasional appearances, and he’s now confirmed to be in at least one episode, though the exact number of episodes he’ll be in is still unknown.

Pisano initially joined the show as a guest star in season 23. After quickly gaining popularity with viewers, he became a main cast member just a month later, in October 2021. He’s also played the same character in three episodes of Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Besides acting in Law & Order: SVU, Pisano recently directed his first feature film, Wet Under Blue Sky. He also wrote the screenplay and plays a leading role in the boxing drama.
