Fans may finally get the shooter game they’ve been waiting for, despite its many past delays and setbacks.
I’m so excited! It looks like we might be getting two new StarCraft games! According to a report, Blizzard is working on another shooter game in the StarCraft universe, on top of the one they teased a couple of years ago. Plus, it sounds like Nexon in South Korea has really kicked things into high gear and is fully developing a new StarCraft title as well. This is huge news for any StarCraft fan like me!
A New StarCraft Revival Is Coming in 2026
So, this new game Nexon is working on? It’s totally different from the StarCraft shooter Jason Schreier talked about in his book, Play Nice. Apparently, Schreier thinks neither of these shooters will actually come out, and he’s pretty sure there are two different StarCraft shooter projects happening at different studios. It’s kinda wild!
Adding to the excitement, Choi Jun-ho is leading the Nexon team. He’s well-known in the StarCraft community as a talented creator of fan-made modifications. This news follows closely on the heels of Nexon’s partnership with Blizzard Entertainment, which set the stage for their work on a new StarCraft game that doesn’t have a title yet.
Nexon is working on a first-person shooter based on StarCraft, but a different StarCraft game—detailed in Jason Schreier’s book—was being led by Dan Hay, who previously headed the Far Cry series at Ubisoft. Many fans are expecting to see announcements about one or both of these StarCraft projects at BlizzCon in September, alongside potential new content for Diablo IV and World of Warcraft.
The real-time strategy game StarCraft launched after three years of development, quickly becoming a hit with players worldwide. The game is set in a distant future where humanity is battling for its existence against the Zerg, an alien race that wants to absorb them, and the Protoss, a highly advanced civilization observing the conflict.
When StarCraft was first released, it received overwhelmingly positive reviews and quickly became incredibly popular. In its first year, over 1.5 million copies were sold, and within ten years, that number grew to more than 9.5 million.
Since the original game’s release, the world of StarCraft has grown with the release of StarCraft II and several expansions for both games. However, attempts to create StarCraft games outside of the real-time strategy genre, like a shooter, haven’t been successful, often leading to cancellation. A prime example is StarCraft Ghost, announced in 2002 but officially canceled in 2014 after more than a decade.
