‘The Mortuary Assistant’ Clip Brings Cult Horror Video Game Back to Life

If you’re easily startled, you might want to be careful! MovieWeb has a brand new clip from the horror film The Mortuary Assistant to share before it hits theaters this Friday – which happens to be Friday the 13th. Based on the popular video game, the clip gives fans of the critically praised horror simulation a preview of the frightening and suspenseful world before it’s shown on the big screen.

The video begins with Willa Holland as Rebecca Owens, a mortician, going about her work at the River Fields Mortuary. She’s shown cleaning up after a procedure, following a checklist for her night shift. When she goes to the basement to restock supplies, she’s surprised by her boss, Raymond Delver (played by Paul Sparks), who steps out of the darkness. He immediately stops her from proceeding, and the clip ends by hinting at a disturbing reason why that part of the mortuary is off-limits.

Released in 2022, the video game The Mortuary Assistant quickly became popular online, especially through reactions from streamers, YouTubers, and TikTok users, thanks to its frightening jump scares and suspenseful gameplay. Recognizing its potential, publisher DreadXP and Epic Pictures Group immediately began working on a movie adaptation. Brian Clarke, the game’s creator, teamed up with Tracee Beebe to write the screenplay, ensuring the film stays true to the source material.

‘The Mortuary Assistant’ Sets Nationwide Release

The film adaptation of The Mortuary Assistant will first appear in theaters on February 13, 2026, followed by a release on the streaming service Shudder starting March 27, 2026. Because the movie is based on a popular video game, it already has a dedicated fanbase which is expected to help its success in cinemas. While it builds upon the game’s story and the terrifying demons of River Fields, the filmmakers also aim to appeal to general horror fans.

It’s fantastic to see The Mortuary Assistant adapted into a film! Players of the game will be thrilled to see the world they know so well brought to life on screen, and moviegoers who enjoy horror will discover a gripping story packed with suspense, disturbing mysteries, and truly frightening moments. This adaptation is a special event, uniting fans of both gaming and horror in a way that feels natural and exciting.

Jeremiah Kipp directs The Mortuary Assistant, a new horror film from Epic Pictures’ Dread label – the team behind the original Terrifier. The film is being released just two weeks after the popular video game adaptation Iron Lung, created by Markiplier, which surprisingly became a box office success, earning around $36.5 million globally on a $3 million budget. Iron Lung‘s success demonstrates that indie horror games can achieve mainstream popularity, and now The Mortuary Assistant hopes to follow suit.
