It appears that fans of Marvel are speculating that recently leaked set photos from the upcoming Punisher television project offer a glimpse into a villain straight out of the comics. Jon Bernthal initially portrayed Frank Castle / The Punisher during Season 2 of Daredevil on Netflix, and later starred in his self-titled series, The Punisher, which ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2019. Bernthal returned to the character in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, a series that was being filmed when this special project was conceived.

The image shows Castle, typically dressed in his hoodie, confronting a woman seated in a wheelchair. This woman gestures towards Castle with an uplifted hand, suggesting a dialogue or interaction. The scene seems to be set in New York City.

Garth Ennis (the author) and Steve Dillon (the artist) introduced the character, Ma Gnucci, as a rival of The Punisher. First appearing in issue 4 of The Punisher Vol. 5, published in 2000, she is the leader of New York City’s last remaining crime family. In the comics, after Castle takes her children’s lives, Ma Gnucci embarks on a mission for revenge.

Information regarding the specifics of the Punisher special has been kept confidential. The identity of the actor playing Ma Gnucci in this special is yet to be revealed, though it’s speculated she might appear. Reinaldo Marcus Green will direct the special, which he also wrote with Bernthal based on a teleplay.

According to reports, Jason R. Moore takes on the character of Curtis Hoyle, while Roe Rancel plays a significant role. It’s anticipated that this special will debut on Disney+ in 2026. Additionally, Bernthal is set to appear as Castle in Spider-Man: A Fresh Start.
