Original Harry Potter Star Is ‘Sick of Talking About’ Potential Reboot Return

With a new Harry Potter TV series coming to HBO, one of the original film series’ actors has stated he doesn’t plan to be involved. David Thewlis, known for playing Professor Remus Lupin, has said he’s finished talking about the possibility of returning to the Wizarding World.

David Thewlis says he has had ‘quite enough’ of the Harry Potter franchise

David Thewlis recently told ScreenTime he doesn’t plan to return to the Harry Potter universe in HBO’s new series. He shut down rumors about potentially reprising his role as Remus Lupin or playing any other character, explaining that he feels it’s time to move on and avoid repeating roles as he gets older.

Thewlis stated he feels too old to reprise his original role and has no desire to return to it, admitting he’s tired of discussing it.

Look, I get it – I wasn’t really drawn to being involved in the Harry Potter films myself, but I totally respect what the franchise does. It’s wonderful seeing how much joy it brings to kids. There’s something really special about making children happy and seeing their faces light up – that’s a really nice feeling.

David Thewlis played Remus Lupin in five of the Harry Potter films, starting with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Lupin was a key character in that third film, serving as the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. He reappeared in supporting roles in Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and both Deathly Hallows movies, and his character dies in the final film, Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

HBO’s upcoming series, announced in 2023, intends to dedicate each season to a single book from the Harry Potter series. This means we likely won’t see the character Lupin until the third season, unless the show deviates from the original novels. Because of this, a new, younger actor will probably play Lupin. The series will feature John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, and is currently slated to premiere in 2027.
