Jess Bush On Nurse Chapel And Spock’s ‘Brutal’ Breakup In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Okay, as a huge Star Trek fan, I have to agree with everyone talking about that scene with Nurse Chapel and Spock in Strange New Worlds – it was seriously rough to watch! Jess Bush, who plays Chapel, said it herself, it was pretty brutal. And get this, they actually finished filming the fifth and final season of Strange New Worlds back in December 2025. That means we’re sitting on seasons four and five – a whole 16 episodes! – that are just waiting to drop on Paramount+. I’m counting down the days!

Nurse Chapel and Spock developed a romantic connection in the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and their relationship blossomed in season two. However, during the musical episode of season two, Chapel was offered a chance to advance her medical career. She ended things with a heartbroken Spock in a public breakup, expressed through song in front of the entire crew of the USS Enterprise.

At the Farpoint 2026 convention, Jess Bush playfully discussed the surprising breakup between Nurse Chapel and Spock in the musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. When a fan asked about it, Bush described the split as “a brutal end,” but also suggested it wasn’t necessarily permanent. You can read her full comment and see a video of the moment below.

To be clear, I wasn’t involved in writing it. (laughs) When I first read the musical’s script, I was really shocked – it was incredibly harsh. Honestly, I’m at a loss for words. It felt like a very difficult ending, but it’s possible this isn’t the final conclusion. Only time will tell.

Jess Bush discussed with co-executive producer and writer Bill Wolkoff how painful Nurse Chapel’s breakup with Spock was. While Spock was understandably upset by Christine’s decision to end their relationship, the two eventually reconciled before the start of season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

In the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, the show moved beyond the Spock and Nurse Chapel relationship, allowing both characters to find new love interests. Christine Chapel developed feelings for Dr. Roger Korby, who was previously established as her future ex-fiancé in Star Trek: The Original Series. At the same time, Spock’s dance lessons with Lieutenant La’an Noonien-Singh led to a romantic connection between them.

Nurse Chapel and Spock finally resolved their unresolved feelings in the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode “Wedding Bell Blues” when Trelane (Rhys Darby) almost forced them to marry. One reason their relationship felt so rushed was the short season length of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, with only 10 episodes making the entire arc feel fast-paced.

Jess Bush has finished filming her role as Nurse Christine Chapel on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but she and the rest of the cast will still be promoting the show’s next two seasons. Her hint that the story between Chapel and Spock might not be over could come to fruition in seasons 4 and 5 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
