As a total film and TV buff, I still think about Mindhunter all the time. It originally dropped on Netflix almost nine years ago and immediately blew everyone away, and honestly, it still feels like the peak of what TV can achieve. Fincher really nailed the atmosphere with stunning visuals and a genuinely creepy vibe. But it’s more than just style; the characters are incredibly well-developed, and the way it explores the very beginnings of the FBI’s attempts to understand criminal minds back in the 70s is just fascinating. Few shows feel as cinematic and gripping as this one.
Even though Mindhunter first hit Netflix nearly a decade ago, it’s still stuck in the minds of so many viewers – and for good reason. After leading us to believe a second season wasn’t happening in 2023, David Fincher dropped a hint that the story might continue as a trilogy of two-hour movies, potentially arriving in 2025. Whether or not we actually get to see more of it, Mindhunter remains, in my opinion, the gold standard for truly captivating television. It set the bar incredibly high, and it’s stayed there.
‘Mindhunter’ is Netflix’s Most Enduring Psycho-Drama of the Last Decade

Netflix
Released in 2017, Mindhunter showcases the talent of director David Fincher, known for films like Se7en and Zodiac. The series is set in the 1970s and follows the early days of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit, detailing how the Bureau first began using criminal profiling.
The show aims to explore the psychology of famous serial killers – to understand what drove them and, ultimately, to stop future crimes. It follows FBI Agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench as they conduct interviews with notorious murderers like Charles Manson, Ed Kemper, and others, hoping to gain insight into their motives.
David Fincher had a lot of control over Mindhunter, influencing everything from the script to the final production, and his dedication to detail really benefited the show. It’s both genuinely scary and incredibly captivating, and it changed the way police dramas are made. Instead of focusing on graphic violence, Mindhunter delves into the backgrounds and minds of serial killers—what made them tick, what led them down a path of violence, and how their lives fell apart.
Beyond its unique approach to exploring the psychology of criminals, Mindhunter showcases the exceptional filmmaking skills of director David Fincher. Known for meticulously crafting his vision through numerous takes, Fincher creates a captivating mood and atmosphere reminiscent of his acclaimed films like Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac, and Gone Girl. The show’s striking visuals are further enhanced by Oscar-winning cinematographer Eric Messerschmidt (Mank), making it a truly stunning series.
Like many excellent TV series, Mindhunter gets even better as it goes on. The introduction of psychologist Wendy Carr (played by Anna Torv) in Season 1, Episode 3, is a key moment, changing the way the FBI agents Ford and Tench work and adding a valuable new point of view to their investigations. The show’s meticulous direction by David Fincher is matched by strong performances from the entire cast, including Anna Torv, Jonathan Groff (who won a Satellite Award), Holt McCallany as Tench, and Cameron Britton, who received an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Kemper.

Given its popularity, it’s not surprising that Mindhunter consistently ranks among the top TV shows on IMDb, currently at #151. Despite being canceled in 2019, fans have continued to ask about a third season, and director David Fincher has repeatedly discussed the possibility. While he seemed to dismiss it in 2023, actor Holt McCallany revealed in 2025 to Collider that Fincher is now exploring a continuation of the series in the form of three feature-length movies.
“I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”
Even though it was turned into a short-lived movie series, Mindhunter is now considered one of the best TV shows ever made.
