Even though the more recent seasons of The Flash weren’t great, the first two seasons still hold up as some of the best superhero TV ever made. There are a lot of superhero shows available now, but that doesn’t automatically mean the quality of the genre is improving.

Many viewers are starting to feel tired of superhero content, and a lot of fans believe the peak of most superhero TV shows has already passed. The announcement that Jessica Jones will appear in season two of Daredevil: Born Again would have been huge news five years ago, but now it doesn’t generate much excitement.

The Flash’s First 2 Seasons Are Peak Television

However, it’s possible the initial expectations were just too high. The 2014 TV series The Flash, which featured DC’s superfast hero Barry Allen, quickly surpassed being a spin-off of Arrow and became a beloved show in its own right.

When it first aired, The Flash’s premiere was the second most-watched pilot episode in The CW’s history, surpassed only by The Vampire Diaries. The show wasn’t just popular with viewers, though – critics loved it too. The first two seasons were exceptional superhero television, helping the Arrowverse become a major force, rivaling Marvel’s success on TV.

Why The Flash Fell Off After Season 2

Watching the first two seasons of The Flash again after twelve years, it’s remarkable how well they still hold up. They genuinely compare to the higher-budget superhero shows on streaming services like Disney+ and HBO Max, which is impressive considering the show originally faced the limitations of a network television budget and creative environment.

It’s disappointing to recall that The Flash didn’t maintain its quality after its second season. The plot became increasingly complicated and overly dramatic. Like many other CW shows, The Flash lost what made it enjoyable – its lightheartedness and clever twists – as it got bogged down in excessive backstory and a large cast of characters.

The Flash Has A Complicated Legacy

Reviewing the first two seasons of The Flash now, it’s obvious the show had a unique quality that most superhero series since then haven’t achieved. Unfortunately, the show declined significantly after those early seasons, which made the initial potential feel wasted.

While The Flash may not have been able to recapture the magic of its initial seasons, it’s hard not to feel a little disappointed when watching the show. The first two seasons were truly excellent, but unfortunately, later seasons didn’t live up to that standard and ultimately affected the show’s overall legacy.
