While Superman outperformed The Fantastic Four at the box office, Supergirl faces a tougher challenge against Spider-Man and will need a boost to succeed. Early reactions from a private screening suggest she might just get it.
Milly Alcock, who briefly appeared as Supergirl at the end of Superman, will play a larger role in the new DC Universe. Early reactions from two test screening groups are overwhelmingly positive about her first full appearance as the character, following the release of trailers and teasers.
Alex Talks Film pointed out that the movie’s visual style is different from Superman, suggesting a more serious and intense mood compared to the cheerful look of last year’s popular film. One standout scene, a fight in a long hallway, is being compared to similar sequences in Daredevil and Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Although James Gunn didn’t write or direct Supergirl, people keep drawing parallels between it and his Guardians films.

Early reactions continue to be largely positive. The only real criticism so far centers around the villain, Kerm of the Yellow Hills. One report praised him as a powerful and frightening antagonist, but another frequent social media user, @Cryptic4KQual, found him to be weak and disappointing.
Most reviews agree the film successfully mixes dark and violent themes with humor. Jason Momoa’s introduction as Lobo has been widely praised as a strong and important performance, especially considering his role in the film’s finale. Many believe this appearance sets the stage for Lobo to appear in future DC Universe projects.
According to early viewers, the movie feels like a blend of several other popular titles – Superman 2025, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Logan, Man of Steel, and The Last of Us. However, it avoids the more mature content seen in some of those films. People familiar with those movies would likely recognize the inspirations – the character Krypto is similar to Rocket, and Kara shares traits with both Joel and Logan.

Often, early screenings lead to significant changes in a film, but Supergirl seems to be an exception – it’s already proving to be different. We’ll have to wait and see how well it does financially when it comes out on June 26, 2026. Supergirl will have a month to earn revenue before Marvel’s Spider-Man, starring Tom Holland, returns in Brand New Day on July 31, marking his first appearance in five years. Expect to hear a lot more about both films in the coming months.
