‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ Super Bowl Spot Reimagines Original Trilogy Creature

The Mandalorian was a groundbreaking series, marking the first live-action television show in the Star Wars universe. It premiered in 2019, following the adventures of the bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his adorable young apprentice, Grogu—affectionately known as Baby Yoda. The show quickly became a hit with audiences, and its second season in 2020 was also well-received. However, fans had to wait three years for the third season, which unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations for many.

Three years after the events of the series, Disney will conclude the story of Din and Grogu with a new movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu. A trailer was released in September, and it was confirmed the film would be featured in a Super Bowl ad in 2026. Many fans were hoping for a more extensive look at the movie, and were eager to find out if they would get one.

The new ad features Din Djarin and Grogu traveling in a floating sleigh pulled by Tauntauns – the large creatures from the icy planet Hoth. Veteran actor Sam Elliott, known for his roles in films like The Big Lebowski, A Star Is Born, and the series 1883, narrates with an encouraging message. He says, “We keep forward, driven by a deeper purpose, guided by an unseen Force.” It’s a clever connection to the Star Wars universe, of course.

‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Has a Lot Riding on It

This feels less like a preview for the movie and more like a standalone advertisement released to coincide with the Winter Olympics. It’s unclear whether Sam Elliott will appear in the film itself, or if he’s only providing voice-over for this ad.

Details about the story of the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu are scarce, but it will take place after season 3 of The Mandalorian and continue to follow Din Djarin and Grogu. Sigourney Weaver, known for her recent work in Avatar: Fire and Ash, will play Colonel Ward, an important figure in the New Republic. Jeremy Allen White, star of The Bear, will portray Rotta the Hutt, the son of the late Jabba the Hutt.

I’m so excited for The Mandalorian and Grogu to hit theaters on May 22, 2026! It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a Star Wars movie in cinemas – the last one was The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019 – so there’s a lot riding on this one. Disney is planning to get back to making Star Wars films regularly after this, with Star Wars: Starfighter scheduled for May 28, 2027. That one’s going to star Ryan Gosling and takes place about five years after The Rise of Skywalker. Interestingly, The Mandalorian and Grogu is set much earlier, years after the original Star Wars trilogy but before the sequel trilogy we’ve already seen.
