Netflix is developing a new show that could be similar to “The Expanse,” which is getting ready to premiere another season following recent production news.
Despite finishing its run on Prime Video over five years ago, The Expanse is still widely considered the best example of modern science fiction television. The show expertly combined believable science with compelling characters and a grand story of space colonization and political intrigue, and it hasn’t been surpassed since.
Look, nothing really feels like The Expanse, and it’s not fair to expect any show to fill those shoes. But I’m really excited about a sci-fi series on Netflix – I just heard they’re moving forward with production, and if they nail it, it has the potential to be just as gripping. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
3 Body Problem Season 2’s Production Update Confirms Its Release Isn’t Too Far
Netflix began production on season 2 of 3 Body Problem in early November 2025, and filming officially finished in February 2026. Although there’s no confirmed release date yet, the new season is expected to launch sometime in 2026.
Because shows with a lot of visual effects, like 3 Body Problem, take a long time to finish after filming, the second season of the Netflix series is likely to be released around late 2026.
Science fiction fans have a lot to look forward to! Several eagerly awaited TV shows are planned for release in 2026. While shows like Silo season 2, Neuromancer, and Dark Matter season 2 don’t have confirmed release dates yet, they’re also expected to debut in the latter half of the year. With 3 Body Problem season 2 joining the lineup, 2026 promises to be a standout year for sci-fi on television.

While the first season of 3 Body Problem isn’t quite on par with top-tier sci-fi shows like The Expanse, it shares a similar strength: it uses real science as a key part of its storytelling, rather than avoiding it.
As a huge fan of shows that really think about the science, I’m loving how 3 Body Problem on Netflix is tackling some seriously complex ideas – everything from the nitty-gritty of theoretical physics to the big questions those concepts raise. It reminds me a lot of The Expanse, which also went deep into things like how things move in space and what life is really like with low gravity.
Season 1 of 3 Body Problem focuses on events happening on Earth. But future seasons will expand the story to include the arrival of the Trisolaran fleet, how humanity reacts through organizations like the Planetary Defense Council, and the plans developed by the Wallfacer Project.
Like the mysterious Protomolecule from The Expanse, the San-Ti in 3 Body Problem feel like overwhelming, almost unimaginable threats that highlight how small humanity is in the grand scheme of the universe. With the creators of Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss, now involved, the Netflix adaptation of 3 Body Problem is expected to improve and could potentially reach the same high quality as The Expanse.
