James Gunn’s DC Reboot Just Revealed Its 3rd-Ever Supervillain Team

James Gunn’s new DC Universe will feature a significant group of supervillains in 2026, making them the third organized villain team in the franchise. While audiences look forward to seeing the Justice Gang become the Justice League, the reboot is also developing its roster of villains, with several teams already in the works and one arriving this summer. Just like compelling hero teams, strong villain groups can generate a lot of excitement, particularly when they’re based on classic DC Comics characters.

I’m so excited for the Supergirl movie! Deadline just reported that the main villains are going to be these really dangerous space pirates called The Brigands – they’re basically ruthless human traffickers. It sounds like they’re going to be a major threat, and I can’t wait to see how Supergirl takes them on!

Diarmaid Murtagh will play Drom Baxton, the second-in-command to the main villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, who is portrayed by Matthias Schoenaerts. Schoenaerts has undergone a significant transformation for the role, sporting a new alien look.

Interestingly, the villains in this film are the same ones featured in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book by Tom King, suggesting the movie will follow that story closely.

The movie seems to be staying true to the original comic book story by including The Brigands. While another villain, Lobo played by Jason Momoa, won’t appear in this installment, promotional materials suggest his impact will still be felt.

I’m really excited about the Supergirl movie! While it’s definitely Kara Zor-El’s story – Milly Alcock is taking on the role – she won’t be completely alone. It sounds like she’ll have a little team helping her out, including a character named Ruthye, played by Eve Ridley, and, get this, her super-dog, Krypto! That’s a fun addition, and I’m curious to see how they all work together.

This fits into a larger pattern within the DC Universe, building on how Superman first brought together the Justice Gang with characters like Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi). But Supergirl‘s story—and the characters around her—is much more personal and tightly focused on the relationship between two unexpected partners.

This report further expands the DC Universe’s background, particularly as several groups of villains are being introduced and built up in just a few movies and shows.

Other DCU Super Villain Teams

Lex Luthor, Engineer, Ultraman, Eve Teschmacher

James Gunn’s Superman film features a main group of villains, headed by Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The team also includes the Engineer (Maria Gabriela de Faria), Ultraman, and Eve Teschmacher, played by Sara Sampaio.

Throughout the story, the team slowly fell apart, and what happened to each member significantly shaped the future of the DC Universe.

Lex Luthor was finally unmasked as the one responsible for the fighting between Boravia and Jarhanpur. He had secretly started the conflict because he was jealous of Superman, but was eventually exposed and taken into custody.

The Engineer wasn’t killed in the final battle in Metropolis, but he was defeated. Meanwhile, Ultraman – who was exposed as a Superman clone created by Luthor – fell into a black hole that opened up as the rift collapsed. It’s safe to say that storyline is finished.

I was totally shocked by Eve Teschmacher’s reveal! It turned out she was head-over-heels for Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo, and that’s why she betrayed Lex, giving away proof of all his wrongdoing. Lex held her captive in his weird little dimension for a bit, but eventually she and all the others he’d captured were let go, and she could finally get back to dating Jimmy. It was such a fun twist!

Lex could try to recruit the Engineer, but escaping Belle Reve will be a major challenge for him.

Lex Luthor & Rick Flag Sr.

In the DC Universe, an unexpected partnership has formed between Lex Luthor and Rick Flag Sr. The bald supervillain is now officially working with Frank Grillo’s version of Flag Sr. in the second season of Peacemaker.

After being arrested in Superman, Lex returned in episode 6 and formed an alliance that became a key part of the story throughout the second season’s finale. This partnership is likely to continue in the 2027 film, Man of Tomorrow.

This is particularly interesting because we already know Superman and Lex Luthor will team up for a short time in the movie to fight Brainiac. This will create an unusual situation where Luthor isn’t strictly a villain, blurring the lines between good and evil.

Rick Flag Sr. serves as a moral opposite to Lex Luthor. Initially presented as a hero in Creature Commandos, Flag Sr.’s sorrow over his son’s death and his consuming desire for revenge against Peacemaker ultimately turned him into a villain by the end of Peacemaker Season 2.

His lack of concern for the deaths of his agents, combined with his secretive actions regarding the QUC, pushed his allies away. This ultimately led people like Sasha Bordeaux and Langston Fleury to create Checkmate.

The location where Peacemaker ends up at the conclusion of Season 2 – Salvation – could be the most significant link between Lex Luthor and Amanda Waller’s father in future storylines.

Flag Sr. thinks regular prisons can’t hold powerful metahumans anymore, so he’s created Salvation as a new kind of holding facility. This makes Lex a crucial part of the plan, as he could use his wealth and influence to ensure Superman is eventually locked up in Salvation.
